Dr Jerzy Jarosz, Professor of the University of Silesia from the Institute of Physics at the University of Silesia in Katowice, has received the main prize in the Popularizer of Science competition. Moreover, Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE has been awarded in the team category.

“Popularizer of Science” competition has been organised since 2005 by „Science in Poland” website and Ministry of Science and Higher Education. It is the oldest and most prestigious competition in Poland, which awards scholars, media people, institutions and social activists who are passionate about sharing knowledge and revealing the secrets of modern science in an accessible way. The winners of previous editions include the following employees of the University of Silesia: Dr Jerzy Jarosz (2006), Dr Magdalena Ochwat (2010) and Jacek Szymik-Kozaczko (2012). The editorial board of Science Station, popular science website of the University of Silesia, was honoured in 2015.

Dr Jerzy Jarosz, Professor of the University of Silesia, is the initiator and long-term coordinator of Children’s University of Silesia, associated with the idea of ŚFN since the very beginning. He is the author of many works in the field of physics education and teaching experiments, and Chair of Ogólnopolski Klub Demonstratorów Physics (Polish Nationwide Physics Demonstrators’ Club). He also gives lectures involving experiment shows entitled „Osobliwości Świata Fizyki” (Peculiarities of the World of Physics).

Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE is ‘currently one of the largest science communication events in Poland and Europe, although it premiered as a small local initiative in 2016’, as emphasized the competition jury. ŚFN is organised by: University of Silesia in Katowice (founder and leader), Silesian University of Technology, Medical University of Silesia, Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, University of Economics in Katowice, Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa and Częstochowa University of Technology. This is another distinction for ŚFN: in June 2019, the festival won the EUPRIO Golden Rose, i.e. the first prize for the best marketing activity among popular science events in Europe.
