The University of Silesia in Katowice, Metropolis GZM and Silesian Library encourage to participate in seminars for students and open lectures conducted by Prof. John Matteson from the City University of New York (CUNY), a Pulitzer Prize winner.

“Thomas Jefferson: The Head and Heart of the Intellectual Slaveowner”

The lecture is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, an iconic figure in the history and culture of the USA, father of the United States Declaration of Independence, whose democratic views contrast with the fact that he owned slaves. Prof. Matteson raises this controversy in his seminar, setting Jefferson in the context of a complex network of biographical and cultural factors determining the shape of the ethical system of an 18th century American intellectual.
