Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino and Ethan Coen are not directors by education, and yet they have made tremendous careers – their names are recognisable all over the world. Do their examples show that it is not worth investing in film education, and that aspiring filmmakers should focus on self-development? How to teach those who want to become successful cinematographers or screenwriters in the future? Does the curriculum keep up with the industry that is constantly changing, both in the business and technological aspects?

Representatives of Polish public and private schools educating aspiring Oscar candidates will try to find answers to the above questions during the discussion panel ‘The future of film schools in Poland’ which will be held on 22 October 2022 at 4 p.m. at Kino Elektronik in Warsaw.

The guests of the panel will be:

  • Krystyna Doktorowicz, PhD, DLitt, Associate Professor – Dean of the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School of the University of Silesia in Katowice;
  • Milenia Fiedler, PhD, DLitt, Associate Professor – Rector of the Polish National, Film, Television and Theatre School in Lodz;
  • Wojciech Marczewski, PhD, DLitt – co-founder and programme director of the Wajda School;
  • Barbara Pawłowska, PhD – Vice-Rector for Education and Students of the Warsaw Film School
  • Jerzy Rados – deputy director of the Gdynia Film School.

The discussion will be led by journalist Stanisław Bryś – a graduate of the organisation of film and television production at USil Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School of the University of Silesia.

The panel is organised by USil Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School and is part of the 38th Warsaw Film Festival, which takes place from 14 to 23 October 2022.

In addition to the discussion panel, the festival also includes competitions featuring films created by employees, students and graduates of USil Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School.

One of them is the full-length feature debut directed by a graduate Maciej Kawalski. His ‘Dangerous Men’ was shown at the opening of the 38th Warsaw Film Festival.

Lecturer Beata Dzianowicz, PhD, DLitt participates in the international competition – her production ‘Shreds’ was among 15 selected films from all over the world.

In addition, the ‘Best Polish short films 2022’ section shows the productions of students of USil Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School:

  • ‘Time for rebellion’ [original title: ‘Czas na bunt’] – Filip Kantor is the production manager,
  • ‘Funeralia’ – the director is Bartłomiej Błaszczyński.
