The University of Silesia in Katowice has once again joined the charity campaign of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity by organising online auctions. This year’s 29th edition helped purchase equipment used in laryngology, otolaryngology and head diagnostics.

One of the auctions put up by our Alma Mater was a flight over the Silesian Voivodship in a research balloon equipped with specialised apparatus. During such flights scientists from the University Laboratories for Atmosphere Control (ULKA) study air pollution, its spread and its effects on health and the environment.

Tomasz Zgoła, PhD Eng., won the balloon flight. He is an employee of the Poznań Science and Technology Park and exhibition supervisor at the Imagine Lab, where he educates on numerous topics related to global climate change, and environmental pollution caused by smog and plastic waste.

On 3 March 2021, the winner of the auction met with Prof. Ryszard Koziołek, Rector of the University of Silesia in Katowice, and then enjoyed a flight in a research balloon, which took off from Muchowiec in Katowice. At the end, our guest was given a guided tour of the laboratories by Assoc. Prof. Mariola Jabłońska, Professor of the University of Silesia, and Head of the University Laboratories for Atmosphere Control.
