Resolution no. 230
of the Senate of the University of Silesia in Katowice
of 3 March 2022
on expressing solidarity with Ukraine and condemning the Russian aggression

Pursuant to Section 19(2) of the Statute of the University of Silesia in Katowice, the Senate hereby decides as follows:

Section 1

The community of the University of Silesia in Katowice expresses its solidarity with the Ukrainian nation, admiration for its heroic attitude in the face of Russian aggression and undertakes to provide Ukrainian refugees, in particular students, doctoral students and employees of Ukrainian universities, with any possible support and help.

The Senate of the University of Silesia in Katowice lends its full support to similar statements of academic circles, including the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland (KRASP), Central Council of Higher Education (RGSWiN), Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) as well as doctoral student and student organisations of 24 February 2022, which unambiguously and firmly condemned the unjustified aggression of the Russian Federation against the independent state of Ukraine and the war crimes committed during this aggression.

Section 2

The Senate of the University of Silesia in Katowice calls on His Magnificence Rector of the University of Silesia in Katowice to suspend institutional cooperation with universities, scientific institutes and any governmental units of the Russian Federation until the Russian army has withdrawn from the territory of Ukraine, as well as to present the position of the academic community of the University of Silesia in Katowice which firmly and unambiguously condemns the Russian military aggression against Ukraine to the authorities of these institutions.

Section 3

At the same time, the community of the University of Silesia in Katowice pays the highest tribute to the citizens of the Russian Federation, in particular the representatives of Russian academic circles, who bravely and openly oppose the war triggered and waged by their state authorities, thus frequently exposing themselves to serious harassment, persecution and punishments. Our unambiguous disapproval of the policy of Russian state authorities should not prevent us from noticing and appreciating the individual acts of opposition of Russian citizens against the attitude of their state authorities, which prove their respect for such values as peace, freedom, equality and human dignity that connect us.

Section 4

The Resolution shall come into force on the day of its adoption.
