On 3 and 4 June 2024, we especially invite teachers, PhD students and students to expand their competences regarding science communication. We are waiting for applications until 24 May.

Bet on science!

The School of Science Communication will be the first initiative of this type in Poland. For two days, School participants will have the opportunity to improve their skills in presenting scientific issues and research results. They will meet with science communication trainers – specialists in, among others, science theatre, modern teaching methods and the so-called “science busking”. David Price, Andrea Brunello and Edward Duca will share their experience and knowledge with everyone interested in disseminating scientific issues.

We encourage teachers, students and PhD students, but also all those who would like to learn new teaching methods, to take part in two-day workshops with science communication specialists. Workshops as part of the School of Science Communication will be held on 3 and 4 June 2024, from 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. at spinPLACE in Katowice at ul. Bankowa 5.

Contemporary science communication is turning towards theatrical expression and creating emotional stories that, thanks to advanced presentation techniques, open science to new recipients. That is why, during meetings with trainers, participants will learn how to create drama in a way that engages the audience. We hope that the workshops will be an opportunity not only to expand current or future professional competences, but also a space to share experiences in teaching and receiving science in schools and at universities.

The aim of the School of Science Communication is to develop passion and increase educational opportunities in the field of modern teaching methods.

The workshops will be conducted in English. Participation is free of charge.

Meet our trainers

David Price – British outdoor scientist, writer, FameLab master class trainer He specialises in extremely mobile and inspiring forms of transferring scientific knowledge. The course structure and contents have been devised and workshopped many times in several research Institutions and Universities and is designed for those who need to meet an audience, not necessarily composed of experts in the field, and to find the keys to creating a sense of curiosity and wonder around the exposed scientific contents.

The contents of the course will be useful also to those interested in creating narrative podcasts or videocasts. We will also reason around the idea that storytelling can become a tool to aid in teaching and to better focus one’s scientific path. Several examples will be provided and, after a theoretical introduction on story construction, participants will be asked to identify themes / scientific subjects on which to focus attention. On those subjects, they will create scientific ‘narratives’.

We will start by devising a dramaturgical plot and then, by means of refining moments, they will create a short story. In the first part of the workshop, the fundamental techniques of story-writing will be used: the identification of the main theme, the construction of a plot, the devising of the characters with their objectives and obstacles, the hero’s journey and also how to fit the science into the narrative in an engaging way. In the second part of the workshop, we will work towards a simple dramatisation of the stories that will be created: voice, body, verbal and nonverbal communication. For this purpose, practical tools will be provided to develop participants’ skills in storytelling and public speaking. At the end of the workshop, if time allows, there will be a restitution of the work being devised, where participants will present their stories to fellow participants (and others interested in the results) in a series of micro presentations lasting a few minutes.

Register via the form: https://formularze.us.edu.pl/form/index/5297

[/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Edward Duca, PhD – 3 and 4 June from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.” tab_id=”1715606862449-6e375c08-0a1f”]

Create your own science and arts (STEAM) activities and transdisciplinary courses for schools.

Teachers Europe-wide face many challenges in the modern classroom.
