For many years he was a lecturer at the University of Warsaw, where he also served as vice-rector. He was a judge from 1997 and the President of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal in 1998-2006. In 2009, he became a judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union. He was awarded the Commander\u2019s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. In 2012 he received an honorary doctorate degree from the European University Institute in Florence.
