The National Science Centre has announced the results of two prestigious calls for proposals: SONATA BIS 10 and MAESTRO 12. In SONATA BIS 10, two scientists from the Institute of Biology, Biotechnology and Environmental Protection were awarded with grants; they took, respectively, 7th and 15th place on the ranking list (out of 24 projects). The total sum of the funds reached almost PLN 5.5 million.<\/p>\n
Winners from the University of Silesia:\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n- Agata Daszkowska-Golec, PhD, Professor of the University of Silesia, \u201c(QUEST) Quest for climate-smart barley \u2013 the multilayered genomic study of CBC function in ABA signaling\u201d, the amount of fund: PLN 3,109,640.
\nThis project research aims to identify the key regulators of plant stress response and focuses on the fundamental question of a given gene\u2019s function in a particular signal transduction pathway, as well as how this knowledge can be utilised in order to produce crops with better drought tolerance. This is especially relevant, because in the last 40 years the agricultural land affected by drought has doubled. The obtained results may provide tools for further, more detailed analyses of the ABA function and drought tolerance in barley. The research will be carried out using the Next-Generation Sequencing technology in cooperation with partners from Germany and Estonia.

\nA member of this kind of buckwheat (Fagopyrum) are the dicotyledons of the Polygonaceae family. The two most important crop plants are buckwheat (esculentum) and Tartary buckwheat (F. tataricum), which play an important role in a wide array of natural products beneficial to human body. The aim of this project is to identify the key changes that take place during the growth of somatic buckwheat hybrids (Fagopyrum). The research will be carried out in cooperation with an institution in France.
