Judge Piotr Hofma\u0144ski has been appointed the President of the International Criminal Court in The Hague. He is the first president from Poland. His term of office will last 3 years.<\/p>\n

Piotr Hofma\u0144ski graduated in law from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toru\u0144, where he also received a doctorate degree. By the resolution of the Council of the Faculty of Law and Administration of 6 March 1990, he was granted the title of Assoc. Prof. of the University of Silesia. The subject of his work was the jurisdictional independence of the criminal court.<\/p>\n

In 1997, by decision of the President of the Republic of Poland, he was awarded the title of professor. From 1996 to 2015 he was a judge of the Supreme Court in the Chamber for criminal matters. In 2014, he was appointed as a judge of International Criminal Court in The Hague for the 2015-2024 term, being the first Pole in the history of this institution.<\/p>\n

The International Criminal Court in The Hague is a court established by the 1998 Treaty of Rome, operating since 2002. It was established to trial people accused of committing the most serious crimes, such as: genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. It consists of 18 judges.<\/p>\n
