The event is part of the European City of Science programme, which will last throughout 2024.<\/p>\n Mountain Week combines elements of cultural heritage, passion for sport and sustainable personality development. We have planned our activities to attract a diverse audience: people who don’t visit the mountains, tourists, outdoor enthusiasts and culture enthusiasts.<\/p>\n The organisers place great emphasis on sports and outdoor activities and have planned such activities as climbing classes, fell walks and activities exposing you to Highlander culture. All activities involve not only improving participants’ physical skills but also promoting the mental and emotional benefits of contact with mountains.<\/p>\n An important element of the event will be meetings with people who have spent most of their lives in the mountains and are happy to share their amazing experiences. Climber, alpinist, mountaineer, the fifth man in the world who conquered the Crown of the Himalayas and the Karakoram \u2013 14 eight-thousanders of the Earth. Member of the nearly hundred\u2013year\u2013old Explorers Club, which awarded him the prestigious Lowell Thomas Award. Co-founder of the Jurassic Mountaineering Club. In October 2018, together with Reinhold Messner, he received a prestigious distinction in sports \u2013 the Princess of Asturia Award, popularly called the \u2019Spanish Nobel\u2019<\/p>\n Krzysztof Wielicki took part in four expeditions to K2, all in a pioneering style and was the first to climb three of them in winter: Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and Lhotse. He stood alone on Lhotse on New Year’s Eve in a corset he wears after damaging his spine in the mountains. He climbed Broad Peak solo in one day (the world’s first ascent of an eight-thousander in 24 hours). He climbed Dhaulagiri (in 16 hours) and Shisha Pangma himself, paving new routes. He still organises expeditions and sets new, bold goals. He is a continuator of the Polish idea of winter exploration of the Himalayas.<\/p>\n You can meet him on Thursday, 8 February (check the schedule).<\/strong><\/p>\n Aleksandra Dzik<\/strong> \u2013 alpinist, international UIMLA mountain guide. She co-runs the BluEmu high-altitude travel agency, organising mountaineering and trekking expeditions to the mountains all over the world as well as mountain trainings. She conducts presentations, workshops and trainings in mountain activities and travelling. Her credits include, among others: the ascent of the eight-thousander Gasherbrum II. Moreover, she was the first Polish woman to conquer the dangerous Pik Pobiedy and to complete all five seven-thousanders of the former USSR, giving her the title of Snow Leopard<\/p>\n She is the first woman in history to complete the longest route of the Elbrus Race. A group of 70 children from Silesian families worked for almost a year and showed determination under the supervision of the Academy\u2019s coaches to qualify for this expedition. The speaker will discuss threats (injuries, overloads, external factors), preparation of the musculoskeletal system for mountain activity and regeneration in conditions of limited resources.<\/p>\n The lecture will be delivered by the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice graduate,\u00a0Jakub Kami\u0144ski, PhD<\/strong>. He has 14 years of professional experience in the field of orthopaedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system. He carries out his professional tasks at the Clinical Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the Musculoskeletal System and at the \u2018Galen\u2019 Orthopaedic Clinic.<\/p>\n The meeting will be held by Beata Tomanek and feature a Himalayan climber \u2013 Krzysztof Wielicki; Rafa\u0142 \u015apiewak, PhD, DSc, Assoc. The event will be hosted by Oskar Placek, MA <\/strong>and Katarzyna Jakubik, PhD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The approximately 13 km long route starts at the Kocierska Pass in Beskid Ma\u0142y (718 m above sea level) and leads along the red trail towards Chatka na Potr\u00f3jnej, where you can warm up, rest and enjoy a buffet. Then the trail leads through the Zakocierska Pass to Chatka Studencka pod Potr\u00f3jn\u0105 (open seasonally), to \u0141amana Ska\u0142a (929 m above sea level), from there, it goes down the yellow trail to the town of Rzyki\u2013Czarny Gro\u0144.
