Development of students and doctoral students<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To meet the needs of students and doctoral students, we have planned activities intended to develop their scientific careers and to support their talents. We are implementing a quality-promoting programme or doctoral students of doctoral schools. We have also purchased a Grammarly license. The application helps doctoral students and students of the University of Silesia to improve their language skills, supports them in ongoing communication and in writing various texts in English. We will also prepare programmes meant to enable building and improving the research competences of young people at the beginning of their research path.<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>

646 academics and doctoral students from the University of Silesia in Katowice applied to receive free-of-charge access to Grammarly<\/em>\u00a0app for professional proofreading in English. The limit of places had been exhausted before the end of one week from the date when the registration form was published. The University of Silesia in Katowice intends to support the academic community in many areas. Taking into consideration the comfort of work for academics and doctoral students, a practical tool for proofreading texts in English has been purchased within the framework of Research Excellence Initiative.<\/p>\n

Due to large interest in the programme, the 2nd edition of sharing Grammarly accounts has been launched.<\/p>\n

The programme beneficiaries include: researchers, academics, and doctoral students of the University of Silesia in Katowice. 800 Grammarly accounts will be made available to 600 employees and 200 doctoral students \u2013 the applications will be handled on a first come, first served basis. The recruitment will last until 31 December 2020. The applications will be handled on a first come, first served basis.<\/p>\n

The purchased license will allow the users to use the app for improving language skills, effectively supporting them in ongoing communication and writing texts in English. Grammarly is an online tool that corrects spelling, suggests corrections and gives clues in real time, indicating spelling, stylistic, grammar and punctuation errors. It has the functionality for detecting the type of the text, as well as the tone and goal of the message. The additional options of the app include the plagiarism checker function.<\/p>\n

The third edition of sharing Grammarly<\/em>\u00a0proofreading app premium accounts has ended. The use of the app will allow the employees and doctoral students of the University of Silesia in Katowice to improve their language skills.<\/p>\n

Grammarly<\/em>\u00a0improves each written text in English on an ongoing basis, making sure that its spelling, style, grammar, and even punctuation are correct. Thus, the tool will effectively support its users in ongoing communication, and in writing scientific texts in English.<\/p>\n

This edition of the\u00a0Grammarly<\/em>\u00a0competition was addressed to research employees, research and teaching employees, teachers, research and technical employees (overall 400 accounts), as well as administrative staff (100 accounts) and doctoral students of the University of Silesia (100 accounts). The applications was handled on a first come, first served basis.<\/p>\n

Support for doctoral students<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of the programmes implemented by the University of Silesia in Katowice as part of the Research Excellence Initiative is the annual competition to increase the doctoral scholarship. Application for the pro-quality scholarships increase could be submitted by doctoral students of the second, third and fourth year in the academic year 2022\/2023 attending the Doctoral School of the University of Silesia and the International Environmental Doctoral School at the Centre for Polar Studies of the University of Silesia. After evaluating all the applications, the competition committee decided to award 35 scholarships. The amount of the increase in the scholarship is determined by the Rector’s order.<\/p>\n

The pro-quality scholarship for doctoral students is financed under the Research Excellence Initiative programme, from the funds obtained in connection with the participation of the University of Silesia in the “Excellence Initiative \u2013 Research University” programme and receiving a 2% increase in subsidy from the Ministry of Education and Science for 2020-2025.<\/p>\n

The competition for increasing the doctoral scholarship for the academic year 2020\/2021 has ended at the Doctoral School of the University of Silesia and at the International Environmental Doctoral School associated with the Centre for Polar Studies at the University of Silesia. The competition was addressed to second and third year doctoral students. Its goal is to motivate and support the development and career of young talents.<\/p>\n

When evaluating the applications, the competition committee took into account scientific achievements depending on the areas represented, including, among others: publications, managing and participating in research projects, pursuing a doctorate with a foreign unit, artistic achievements, including awards and distinctions won in competitions or artistic reviews.<\/p>\n

The pro-quality scholarship for doctoral students of doctoral schools of the University of Silesia is financed under the University of Silesia programme Research Excellence Initiative.<\/p>\n

The competition for additional pro-quality scholarship awarded for special scientific and artistic achievements of doctoral students at the University of Silesia in Katowice has concluded.<\/p>\n

A total of eleven winners were selected, representing the areas of social sciences, exact sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and humanities. The committee took into account the following criteria: publications, participation in research projects, awards and distinctions achieved in calls for proposals and artistic reviews, doctorate degree executed in cooperation with a foreign unit.<\/p>\n

The funding was granted within the framework of the\u00a0Research Excellence Initiative<\/a>, which supports, among others, the development and career of young scientists.<\/p>\n

Motivating and supporting the development and scientific career of young talents is one of the objectives of\u00a0Research Excellence Initiative<\/a>. Under the programme we allocated PLN 250,000 for additional pro-quality scholarship for first, second, third and fourth year doctoral students of doctoral schools at the University of Silesia in Katowice.<\/p>\n

To join the call for proposals, a doctoral student had to submit an application via electronic form available at:\u00a0www.us.edu.pl\/szkola-doktorska<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The deadline for submitting applications was 6 September 2021, and the assessment criteria depended on the field of science represented by the doctoral student:<\/p>\n
