My research focuses broadly on Old English (pre-1066 AD) literature, the uses of apophatic philosophy in the early European Middle Ages, issues related to medieval emotionology, and questions of medieval culture associated with the fields of social history and femininity. My current studies revolve around the poetics and politics of fear in Old English literary tradition (conducted as Poland’s National Science Centre grant, OPUS grant no. 2022/45/B/HS2/03717). I published a book on Old English riddles and over sixty papers discussing topics devoted to Old English emotional, philosophical, and cultural outlooks, literary depiction of royal power in the early English Middle Ages, Middle English romances and fabliaux, medieval French literature, and medieval visual culture. I have also edited and co-edited seven volumes of papers related to medieval studies and the intersections of history, historiography, and philology, and co-authored a project resulting in a book of his poetry and computer art inspired by medieval culture. I have lectured at the Universities of Cracow, Oslo, Reykjavik, Rome (Sapienza), Tarragona, Vilnius, Warsaw, and York St. John. In 2019, I was a visiting professor at the University of Alberta, Canada. As the supervisor of H/Story, a research group exploring interdependencies between literary and historical studies, I have organised many successful international conferences (e.g., Cryptohistories, HistoRisus: Histories of Laughter, The Body In/Of History, Emotions: Engines of History, Sense and Sexuality: Erotic Discourses in/of History. With the CNOES, I co-organised an internationally-staffed summer school in Wolin for over forty doctoral students from across the globe specialising in early medieval studies (in 2023) and the triennial 2025 Saga Conference in Katowice. Currently, I hold the position of Dean’s Plenipotentiary for International Cooperation at the Faculty of Humanities. In April 2026, I was elected President of the International Society for the Study of Early Medieval England (ISSEME).

Selected recent publications:

“Shaming the Non-Christian in Old English Juliana and Judith: Weaponized Emotions and Viking Raids in Early Medieval England” in: Literature and History 34.2 (2025), pp. 121-143, https://doi.org/10.1177/03061973251401559.

“A Companionship of Fear: Non-Human Companions and the Uses of Terror in the Exeter Book’s Guthlac A” in: Anglica Wratislaviensia 63 (2025), pp. 25-41, https://doi.org/10.19195/0301-7966.63.2.3.

“Marie de France’s Writing on Water: the Etymological Narrativity of the Sea in the ‘Lais’” in Marilina Cesario, Hugh Magennis, Elisa Ramazzina eds., The Elements in the Medieval World.
