Title: Siwaqaite, Ca6Al2(CrO4)3(OH)12·26H2O, a new mineral of the ettringite group from the pyrometamorphic Daba-Siwaqa complex, Jordan

PhD student Rafał Juroszek and employees dr Irina Galuskina and prof. Evgeny Galuskin from our Institute, published an article in the American Mineralogist magazine concerns a new mineral – siwaqaite, which was discovered in the cavities within the spurrite marble of the Hatrurim Complex in Jordan. This mineral was approved in 2019 by the Commission of New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification at the International Mineralogical Association. Siwaqaite, ideally Ca6Al2(CrO4)3(OH)12·26H2O, is a unique mineral of the ettringite group, in which chromium (Cr6+) forms a chromate group (CrO4)2-. This new mineral can play a significant role as a prototype to create materials for capturing very dangerous chromium compounds (Cr6+) in the environment.
