The history of the Institute of Earth Sciences

1973 – The Independent Department of Geography at the Institute of Biology of the University of Silesia in Katowice is established

1974 – The ordinance of the Minister of Science, Higher Education and Technology establishes the Faculty of Earth Sciences, which began its activity in Sosnowiec in a building at 4 Szkolna Street

1974  – The first entrance exams at the newly created Faculty of Earth Sciences

1974 – Part-time studies in the field of geography are established

1974 – Docent Dr. Marian Marczak is elected as the first Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

1975 –  Prof. Dr. Hab. eng. Aleksander Jachowicz becomes the Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

1975 – The Faculty receives a building on Partyzantów Street, which was intended for the needs of geography

1977 – The building of the laboratory at Będzińska Street (then Mielczarski Street) is completed and put into use

1978 – The first master’s exam – Izabela Psykała

1981 – Prof. Dr Hab. Kazimierz Kozłowski becomes the Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

1982 – The entire Faculty is moved into the building at Będzińska Street (formerly Mielczarski Street)

1987 – Prof. Dr Hab. Stanisław Bukowy is elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

1990 – Prof. Dr. Hab. Andrzej T. Jankowski is elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

1991 – The Faculty was granted the right to confer the academic title of Doctor of Earth Sciences in the field of geology

1991 – First defense of a doctoral thesis at the Faculty – Monika Jachowicz, MA

1992 – The right to confer doctoral degrees was extended to geography

1993 – Prof. Dr. Hab. Jacek Jania becomes Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

1994 – Honorary doctorate awarded to Prof. Dr. Jean Nicod based on the application of, inter alia, Council of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

1994 – The Earth Museum is established

1995 – Part-time studies in the field of geology are established

1996 – Prof. Dr. Hab. Andrzej T. Jankowski is re-elected as Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

1997 – The Faculty of Earth Sciences obtains full academic rights; and can confer postdoctoral degrees in Earth Sciences in the field of geology and geography

1997 – First habilitation colloquium at the Faculty – Dr. Lesław Teper

1998 – Doctoral studies are launched based on the Rector’s Order of 15 July 1998

1999 – Resumption of work on the first stage of the Faculty expansion on older foundations

Inauguration of the academic year 1993/1994

2001 – The Auditorium Complex is put into operation

2001 – Begin of work on the “Central Inter-Faculty Assembly Hall” as part of the second stage of the Faculty expansion

2001 – The second term of holding office by Prof. Dr. Hab. Jacek Jania as the Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

2003 – The completed Inter-Faculty Assembly Hall, the Reading Room of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and the Exhibition Hall of the Earth Museum are put into use

2004 – Relocation of the Reading Room to a new room in the Inter-Faculty Auditorium Complex

2004 – Last recruitment for part-time studies in the field of geology

2006 – The façade of the teaching building is replaced
2007 – Beginning of construction work on modernization of the teaching building

2007 – The geophysics programme bbecomes an inter-faculty field of study

2008 – First enrollment for the full-time geophysics programme

2008 – Honorary doctorate awarded to Prof. Jon Ove Hagen through a proposal by Scientific Board of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

2008 – Prof. Dr. Hab. Adam Idziak is elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

2010 – Last enrollment for the part-time undergraduate geography programme

2016 – Prof. Dr. Hab. Leszek Marynowski is elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences

2016 – Establishment of postgraduate master’s degree studies in the field of Tourism

2019 – The Faculty of Natural Sciences is established
