The Peruvian subduction zone is prone to destructive megathrust earthquakes that are the scope of scientific investigations from many years. However, our knowledge on smaller crustal earthquakes in the overriding plate that, due to the shallow focal depth and proximity to the human settlements, can be equally hazardous, is significantly smaller. Studies conducted by dr. Krzysztof Gaidzik from our institute and M.Sc. student Malwina Wi\u0119sek, using seismic and field data together with the interpretations of satellite images and digital elevation models, suggest a significant seismic potential of these crustal faults, and thus notable hazard for local communities.<\/p>\n
