Abstrakt wykładu

Conflict is a normal part of life, and it can occur between men and women but also between members of the same sex. Competition may be served by different emotional systems geared towards solving different problems. In a multinational project sampling 3,707 (1374 men; WEIRD = 2349) volunteers and students (M = 24.80, SD = 7.62) we identified—through factor analyses—three emotions of intrasexual competition: (1) envy (i.e., wanting what others have), (2) jealousy (i.e., protecting what one has), and (3) superiority (i.e., beliefs that one is better). Structurally, this three-dimensional model fit the data better then a one-dimensional or two-dimensional model and was invariant by sex and sample classification. We examined individual differences in these three emotions in men and women and different samples, and in relation to the Dark Triad traits (i.e., psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism), life history strategies of mating and parenting, and the age of the participant. Results are discussed using an adaptationist lens.
