The Three Minute Thesis®—Polish your English competition is aimed at foreign and Polish doctoral students who want to present the issues from their doctoral thesis in English in 3 minutes. The competition is open to doctoral students from universities and branches of the Polish Academy of Sciences in the Silesian Voivodeship.

Competition schedule:

until March 14 – preliminaries; participants register via the form on the website: https://www.polsl.pl/rjo7-cpn/en/registration-three-minute-thesis/ and send a video file with a 3-minute speech to konkurs3mt@polsl.pl,
until March 25 – the jury evaluates the submitted video with speeches and selects the 20 best presentations to participate in the eliminations,
May 10 – eliminations at the Center of New Technologies of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice; the jury selects 10 finalists from 20 participants, who will take part in the final,
June 6 – final at the Silesian University of Technology Library in Gliwice.

I kindly ask those who are planning tutoring to choose a tutor and agree on cooperation with him/her for the next year by that time. This applies to tutors employed at the University of Silesia, as well as from other Polish and foreign research centers and universities. Since we have a special pool of funds in the STER program to finance tutoring with foreign researchers, I recommend this solution to your attention.

I kindly ask you to meet this deadline – by the end of April we have to submit the demand for teaching hours of employees to faculties. After this date, it will no longer be possible to register tutors from the University of Silesia. Others – only on the basis of the written consent of the area coordinator.

Effective February 28^th 2025, the University Council of Doctoral Student Government announces a competition for doctoral students and doctoral organizations of the University of Silesia for funds. The maximum amount of funding is PLN 5,000 and PLN 10,000, respectively.

The competition funds are used to support such activities and projects aimed at activating the environment of doctoral students, improving the quality of their scientific research, publishing their results or popularizing scientific knowledge.

Applications can be submitted until March 14^th  2025 at: doktoranci@us.edu.pl . In addition,  until March 8^th , we will accept your applications for consultation for formal errors with the possibility of sending them back for correction.

We also inform you that due to the amendment of the Regulations on the distribution of funds at the disposal of the Doctoral Student Council of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the repeal of § 3(5) of the Regulations by a resolution of the URSD dated February 27, 2024, applicants for funding from the URSD budget do not need to show previous application for funds in the Doctoral School competition.

In addition, we remind you:

-The form for individual applications is Annex No.1 and for academic organisations is Annex No.2;

-In Section I of Appendix 1 dedicated to year of study it is required to indicate current year of studies, not the academic year;

-The declaration of consent to the processing of personal data requires, in addition to the date and signature, the selection of the appropriate option from I consent/ I do not consent;

-Signatures on all documents may be either handwritten or through a qualified electronic signature.

We kindly ask you to carefully read the provisions of the Regulation and all documentation in the attachments on the site, and to send us well thought-out projects. The amount of funds is limited! Submission of a correctly filled out application by the deadline does not guarantee the funds will be allocated. The assessment of projects by the URSD competition committee will be the deciding factor. The final amount of funds available for distribution in the competition will be determined by the Council on the basis of the allocated amount of the URSD budget for 2025.

Application procedure:

• a doctoral student fills in and sends the SRW form (https://formularze.us.edu.pl/form/index/5988), and then confirms the submission of the application by clicking on the link sent by the system. Deadline for closing the system: March 7th (Friday) at 12:00.
• a doctoral student brings the application to a supervisor and asks him/her for approval
• a supervisor informs the Doctoral School about approval by filling and sending another SRW form: https://formularze.us.edu.pl/form/index/5991. The deadline for this approval is March 10 (Monday), 23:59.
• if significant changes are suggested by a supervisor, a doctoral student should fill the application form again. Please remember that this is not possible after the term.
• applications that are not approved by a supervisor, will not be taken into consideration (without first warning).
• applications that do not meet the formal requirements (from the regulations or from the additional conditions listed below) will not be considered (without being asked to supplement or correct)
• the committee’s decision is final and cannot be appealed.

Additional terms of the competition, not included in the Regulations:

1. No funds exceeding PLN 5,000 will be awarded per doctoral student. If the applications submitted by one doctoral student extend 5000 PLN in summary, they will be all rejected in total.
2. A doctoral student should submit several applications if he or she wants to apply for financing of various projects (for a total amount not exceeding PLN 5,000).
3. The competition introduces a limit of funds that can be applied for in individual categories (not exceeding PLN 5,000 in total):
   1. foreign travel – PLN 5,000
   2. domestic travels – PLN 3,000
4. Only funds to be spent in the period after the contest and till the end of 2025 may be financed in this competition.
5. A doctoral student who has submitted an individual research plan should apply for funds planned in the IPB (IRP) budget. Other activities will be financed only in the case of remaining free funds after financing all activities included in IPB (this rule does not apply to 1st-year doctoral students).

The Annual Transform4Europe PhD conference “Societies on the Move: Challenges of Today, Prospects for the Future“ will be hosted by Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski in Sofia on 1-2 April 2025.

Outstanding keynote speakers will deliver visionary and plenary speeches. Doctoral students and early-stage academics from all scientific areas are kindly invited to participate, showcase the results of their research work, engage in discussions with their peers and with established researchers. The participants will receive a certificate jointly issued by the Transform4Europe Alliance universities. The conference papers will be published in Conference Proceedings after scientific review.

The conference will focus on the current and envisaged challenges today’s societies face due to political and economic crises, war, climate change and the rapid advancement of digital technologies and AI in all spheres of life. It is thematically related to the three Transform4Europe focus areas:

• Societal transformation, community building and inclusion
• Digital transformation and smart regions
• Environmental Transformation and sustainability

Selected participants will receive advance payment for subsitance and local commuting costs according to business travels’ rules applied at the University of Silesia (per diem for Bulgaria amounts to 40 EUR), based on a travel form and costs agreement filled in, signed by a participant and approved by the dean of the faculty.

Accomodation and transport will be provided by the University of Silesia. Hotel will be booked and paid for the group of participants. Flight tickects will be purchased in one batch for the entire group through the cooperating travel agency. Upon return, participants must submit the costs settlement and short report.

Selected students will be admitted to participate in the trip on on 31 March – 3 April 2025 in one group. It is not possible to shorten or extend the trip or to leave from/return to a different location than the rest of the group.

Shedule of courses – summer semester 2024/2025

On 26th November 2024 at 5.30 p.m., an election meeting of the University’s Doctoral Student Council will be held. The venue of the meeting is room 425 in the building of the Faculty of Science and Technology (Katowice, Bankowa 14 Street, directly above Doctoral School Office).

All persons studying at Doctoral Schools at the University of Silesia, as well as persons pursuing a doctorate as part of their doctoral studies at the University, may take part in the election in active and passive form. Any person with active or passive electoral rights to the URSD attending the election meeting has the right to be a candidate and to propose candidates.

The number of seats to be filled depends on the number of candidates proposed, but may not be less than eight or more than twelve.

Joint dual degree doctoral program from the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Sapienza University in Rome
Doctoral School of the University of Silesia in Katowice announces the opening of the admission for the joint dual degree doctoral program of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Sapienza University in Rome in the field of literary studies, cultural studies, linguistics, and translation studies in English. The interview will be held in English on November 12, 2024, at 13.00 on the Teams platform.
By October 8, 2024, Candidates are required to:
1) demonstrate their proficiency in English at the C1 level by submitting ONE of the following documents: a) an MA diploma in English, b) a CAE certificate or an analogous certificate confirming the Candidate’s command of English at the C1 level, or c) a diploma of graduation from a recognized foreign university in which the language of instruction is English;
2) fill the application form to provide a description of the dual degree project and a list of academic achievements achievements-Sapienza Research-project-SAPIENZA
3) submit the supervisor’s letter of reference in support of the Candidate’s application to join the dual degree program.
On November 12, 2024, the Candidates will be interviewed and assessed by an examination committee chaired by the discipline coordinator for humanities, theology and arts and composed of four full or associate professors (“professore ordinario” or “professore associato” on the Italian side and “doktor habilitowany” or “profesor tytularny” on the Polish side), representing the disciplines of English Literary and Cultural Studies as well as Translation Studies and Linguistics: three examiners shall represent the University of Silesia and one shall represent the Sapienza University in Rome.
The joint program will be realized in the co-tutelle formula, upon the conclusion of relevant agreements between the two Universities. In order to obtain a doctoral diploma from the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Sapienza University in Rome, in the course of the program the doctoral student is required to spend at least 5 months at the partner University under the academic supervision of the co-director of the thesis. The participation in the program is free of charge, but the costs related to the stay at the partner University must covered by the doctoral student himself or herself (the costs of transportation, accommodation, the costs of health insurance required by the partner, and third party liability insurance costs). At the same time, the doctoral student may apply for funds from the PROM program, make use of the Erasmus Plus scholarship offer, and other forms of support available at the University of Silesia.
The PhD candidate writes one thesis in English and there will be one public defense in that language.
