The post Facultative classes in the Doctoral School 2025/2026 – invitation first appeared on Szkoła Doktorska.

]]>
We invite you to submit offers of facultative courses for PhD students of the Doctoral School in the academic year 2025/2026. Facultative courses should concern general competencies that are useful to all or some doctoral students as future researchers, academic teachers, science communicators or employees of various technological industries. They should not contain a component specific to a discipline – this is reserved for specialist courses, which we have asked the Institutes responsible for conducting research, and therefore best understanding of what specialist competencies PhD students need, to offer.

The invitation is addressed to all academic teachers employed at the University of Silesia, as well as to people who are not academic teachers, who want to offer PhD students specific, useful competencies.

Link to the form: https://forms.office.com/r/Q6aPH7bXbM

The form will be open until 12:00 on April 22. The offer will then be analyzed and presented to PhD students. The final list of classes will be selected by April 30.

Notes:

  1. Before preparing an offer, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the educational program at the Doctoral School, so as not to duplicate issues that are covered by compulsory classes.
  2. The offer of optional classes is built from scratch every year. People who want to conduct again classes already conducted in previous years are also asked to fill out the form.

The post Preparation and implementation of a project – new organization of the course first appeared on Szkoła Doktorska.

]]>
The module Preparation and Implementation of a Research Project aims to prepare doctoral students to apply reasonably and effectively for funding for their research activities, as well as to efficiently implement the obtained projects.

Each doctoral student should prepare and submit an application for funding for their project from external sources during their education at the Doctoral School. Therefore, doctoral students who plan to apply in a given year (unless they have already completed the classes) enroll in the Preparation and Implementation of a Research Project classes.

The new project of the course assumes division into several blocks, corresponding to the stages of project preparation. During the classes, doctoral students work on an application in the NCN Preludium competition.

  1. How to build a research model (4 hours).
  2. Strategies for substantive preparation of an application (2 hours).
  3. Preparation of substantive content of the application (12 hours).
  4. Work on the formal side of the application, including the budget (8 hours).
  5. Data management plan (4 hours).

Classes begin with parts A and B. Parts C, D and E are conducted in parallel.

When registering for classes, Ph.D. students always choose the group assigned to their discipline. For PhD students in the humanities there are two groups to choose from.

Classes are organized differently for different disciplines – sometimes they are led by one person, but usually by two or more. A detailed schedule will be provided to each group.

Regardless of the course of classes, the PhD student is required to come to the faculty project office and inform them about plans to submit a grant application. This should be done at the earliest possible stage by filling out the form, in accordance with the instructions on the website: https://us.edu.pl/pracownik/sprawy-naukowe/strefa-projektow/skladanie-wnioskow-projektowych/. Due to the fact that Preludium NCN applications do not require your own contribution, you do not have to wait until the budget is precisely determined to apply.

Passing the module is based on Preparing a grant application. The instructors, in consultation with the PhD student and the supervisor, decide whether the application should be sent for assessment.

The post Optional courses 2024/2025 – importand survey first appeared on Szkoła Doktorska.

]]>
We present the initial offer of optional and specialized courses for doctoral students for the academic year 2024/2025. All doctoral students who are going to take part in optional courses in the coming academic year are asked to read the offer and vote in the survey by April 26. Only the courses you indicate will be offered in the next academic year.

Offer: facultative and specialized courses – selection of an offer for 2024-2025

Survey: https://forms.office.com/e/eR6Adw58mh

The offer in the file is very extensive, so it has been divided into semesters and facultative/specialized courses. The survey is divided only into faculties. This does not mean, however, that doctoral students of a given faculty can choose classes only from their faculty. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the entire offer. Especially in the case of optional courses, the place of employment of an academic teacher is only of minor importance.

What is the difference between facultative and specialized classes?

The offer of optional courses is divided into facultative and specialized. Facultative courses are open to everyone and do not require any specialized knowledge at the entrance. They present knowledge introducing a given issue or provide the so-called soft skills. The disciplines listed are only suggestions.

Specialized courses require participants’ prior knowledge or specific competencies, so upon registration, they will only be available to doctoral students of specific disciplines.

This division was prepared due to the reported needs and corresponds to the division in the education program for doctoral students who will start their education in the academic year 2024/2025. From the perspective of the education programs of current doctoral students, both forms serve to pass optional courses.

Doctoral students who started education in 2023/2024 should attend at least 4 lectures to complete the module. Doctoral students of earlier years who have not previously completed the “Scientific career planning and personal development” module should participate in at least 7 lectures. You can choose lecturers representing any scientific disciplines.
