Doctoral School of the University of Silesia in Katowice announces the opening of admission for the joint dual degree doctoral program of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Sapienza University in Rome in the field of literary studies, cultural studies, linguistics, and translation studies in English.

This admission is open to doctoral students newly admitted to the Doctoral School and those completing their first year.

Necessary documents

By October 6, 2025, Candidates are required to:

• demonstrate their proficiency in English at the C1 level by submitting ONE of the following documents: a) an MA diploma in English, b) a CAE certificate or an analogous certificate confirming the Candidate’s command of English at the C1 level, or c) a diploma of graduation from a recognized foreign university in which the language of instruction is English;
• fill the application form to provide a description of the dual degree project and a list of academic achievements achievements-Sapienza Research-project-SAPIENZA
• submit the supervisor’s letter of reference in support of the Candidate’s application to join the dual degree program.

The interview will be held in English on October 10, 2025, at 13.00 on the Teams platform.

The Candidates will be interviewed and assessed by an examination committee chaired by the discipline coordinator for humanities, theology and arts and composed of four full or associate professors (“professore ordinario” or “professore associato” on the Italian side and “doktor habilitowany” or “profesor tytularny” on the Polish side), representing the disciplines of English Literary and Cultural Studies as well as Translation Studies and Linguistics: three examiners shall represent the University of Silesia and one shall represent the Sapienza University in Rome.

More about the program

The joint program will be realized in the co-tutelle formula, with two supervisors. In order to obtain a doctoral diploma from the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Sapienza University in Rome, in the course of the program, the doctoral student is required to spend at least 5 months at the partner University under the academic supervision of the co-director of the thesis. Each year, doctoral students must pay an initial fee, but they will be able to receive an additional scholarship for the time spent in Rome.

Doctoral students are responsible for obtaining funds for mobility. Thay may apply for funds from the PROM program, Erasmus+ scholarship offer, and other forms of support available at the University of Silesia.

The PhD candidate writes the thesis in English and there will be one public defense in that language.

On July 15th at 3:00 PM, candidates received information about their individual recruitment results via the IRK system (https://irk.us.edu.pl/en-gb/), and those who were not selected received an administrative decision.

The next stages of the recruitment process are underway. Admission lists will be published by September 19th.

Successful candidates are reminded to sign in for the Doctoral School – no registration will constitute withdrawal from the recruitment process.

Enrollment time

Registration for persons qualified in the admission procedure will take place from July 16, 2025 to July 18, 2025:

Wednesday 16/07/2025: 9.30 – 12.30; 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.;
Thursday 17/07/2025: 9.30 – 12.30; 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.;
Friday 18/07/2025: 9.30 – 12.00;

Registration should be made in person or by a person authorized on a written document (the authorization remains in the documentation) at the Doctoral School Office, Katowice, ul. Bankowa 14, room 406B (foreingers – room 406).

Candidates who have not yet uploaded a photo to the IRK system and have not completed their ORCID number should complete it immediately – without it, registration will not be possible.

Foreign candidates who, for organizational reasons (e.g. visa issue), cannot arrive shortly after admission should contact Ms Diana Pasek from the DS office (diana.pasek@us.edu.pl).

Necessary documents

The candidate brings documents in a white, blank, tied A4 document folder. The folder should be described by the instruction zal-nr 1-opis teczki-2025 eng instruction. The folder should contain:

1. Application – personal questionnaire – for admission to the Doctoral School, printed from the candidate’s personal registration account in IRK: My account -> recruitment applications -> Documents and further steps (at the bottom of the page)
2. A photocopy of the diploma certifying obtaining second-cycle qualifications (original available for inspection), or in the absence thereof, a certificate from the dean’s office confirming the award of the professional title. A photocopy of the diploma copy must be provided immediately after receiving it.
3. ZUS ZUA form completed by the instructions, zał-2-druk-ZUS-ZUA; Explanations for ZUS ZUA printed in two copies.
4. The completed scholarship application zal-nr-4-application-for-a-doctoral-scholarship-2025 printed in two copies.
5. A signed declaration of knowledge of the principles arising from the Regulations on the protection, use, and management of the results of intellectual works at the University of Silesia in Katowice and the principles of their commercialization (Appendix No. 5 – Annex to Regulation No). 6. A statement authorizing the University of Silesia to demonstrate the doctoral student’s achievements when evaluating the discipline (Appendix 6 – zał-6-declaration-for-a-discipline). Note: Please leave the album number for later addition.

The first stage of the admission process for the Doctoral School at the University of Silesia in Katowice for the academic year 2025/2026 has ended.

209 candidates took part in the process. 157 candidates were qualified for the second stage. The second stage – interviews – will take place on July 8-10, 2025, on-site, at the headquarters of the Film School of the University of Silesia in Katowice, ul. Św. Pawła 3. Candidates who ask for online interview will be informed about the way of connection.

The schedule of interviews, divided into recruitment areas, contains information about the room, date, discipline, and candidate’s identification number. The identification number can be checked in the IRK system.

Qualified candidates will receive additional information via the IRK system. We kindly ask you to read this information carefully.

Unqualified candidates who were rejected for formal reasons, or whose project was assessed poorly by experts at the first stage, will receive administrative decisions within a few days via the IRK system.

The candidates may participate in the admission procedure even before they formally finish their studies and obtain a master’s degree or an equivalent degree. However, they will not be admitted to the Doctoral School until they deliver (upload into IRK system) a document confirming obtaining the appropriate title.

The candidates can register, provide all the data and upload the necessary documents for the assessment. They will be evaluated and may be interviewed (after a positive evaluation of a project of a research plan) before the defense of the master’s thesis.

At the registration stage, which is until June 20, 15:00, the candidates only need to enter the field of study they are graduating, the type of diploma and the year of obtaining it. Of course, a candidate who has already obtain the diploma may and should provide all the information and scans regarding the diploma upon registration.

Until July 14, 12:00 – before the results of the admission – the candidate must upload a scanned copy of the diploma, or a certificate from the institution awarding a master’s degree on the term of finishing education or a declaration that they will deliver (upload into IRK) a diploma, specifying the date of delivery of the document. In the last case, the scanned copy of the diploma must be submitted by September 11 at the latest – if not, the candidate will receive a decision not to be admitted to the Doctoral School, regardless of prior qualification.

Certificate from the institution awarding a master’s degree

A candidate who has obtained a master’s degree or an equivalent degree, but whose university has not yet issued a diploma, may upload to the system a certificate issued by that university, confirming that the relevant qualifications have been obtained. The diploma must be delivered immediately upon receipt.
