From 24 to 28 August 2026, students from the University of Silesia in Katowice and Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas took part in the Summer School of Applied Diplomacy in Kaunas and Vilnius. The programme combined theoretical lectures and workshops with first-hand experience of how state and diplomatic institutions operate, as well as an exploration of Lithuania\u2019s cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

As part of the programme, participants took part in workshops on diplomatic protocol, covering, amongst other things, the rules of etiquette, precedence, the organisation of official visits and intercultural communication. Study visits to key institutions in Vilnius formed an important part of the programme.<\/p>\n

During their visit to the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, the participants met with Speaker Juozas Olekas. The discussion centred, amongst other things, on Polish-Lithuanian cooperation and the role of parliament in shaping international relations. At the Polish Embassy in Vilnius, the students met with Polish Ambassador Rafa\u0142 Poborski and Consul Zbigniew Ciosek, learning about the practical aspects of the day-to-day work of a diplomatic and consular mission.<\/p>\n

A highlight of the programme was a meeting with the First Lady of Lithuania, Diana Naus\u0117dien\u0117, at the Presidential Palace in Vilnius. The discussion centred on the role of universities in strengthening democracy, the importance of cultural diplomacy and soft power, and Polish-Lithuanian cooperation. The topic of cooperation between the University of Silesia and Vytautas the Great University in supporting Ukrainian centres operating in Poland and Lithuania was also raised.<\/p>\n

Exploring the history and heritage of Vilnius was also a key part of the programme. As part of their project work, the students prepared and led their own city tours. One group presented the Jewish heritage of Vilnius, including, amongst others, the Museum of Jewish Culture and Identity in Lithuania, the site of the former Great Synagogue of Vilnius, the Choral Synagogue and the area of the former ghetto. The other tours included, amongst others, the Gate of Dawn, the Bastion, Zarzecze, the Bernardine Garden and Cathedral Square.<\/p>\n

Participants also had the opportunity to meet Roman G\u00f3recki-Mickiewicz, the great-great-great-grandson of Adam Mickiewicz, at Caf\u00e9 Montmartre. The conversation centred on contemporary international relations, the ties between France, Poland and Lithuania, and the significance of cultural identity and the legacy of the great poet.<\/p>\n

The Summer School of Applied Diplomacy provided an opportunity to combine academic knowledge with practical experience, to develop teamwork and communication skills, and to gain an understanding of diplomacy from the perspective of those who practise it on a daily basis. The visit to Vilnius also demonstrated that modern diplomacy is not just about protocol and procedures, but also about dialogue, relationships, culture and mutual understanding.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
