Noras’s book Geschichte des Neukantianismus[1] sums up almost thirty years of research into neo-Kantianism done in the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Silesia in Katowice. What is special about this book is that it offers a complete overview of the origins of neo-Kantian movement, as well as of particular directions and schools related to it. Meanwhile, other available works concerned with this issue have focused on neo-Kantianism rather selectively and in a piecemeal fashion. Professor Andrzej Noras’s study, on the strength of its detailed and tenacious treatment of the issue, may be described as exactingly thorough, while its conclusions rise far above the claims already made in the literature on neo-Kantianism. Thereby this book opens new avenues for research into neo-Kantianism: it is a classical philosophical work, replete with new knowledge on the subject, but, crucially, it is a new, ready-made model for doing philosophy in XXI century. By having it translated into German and published by Peter Lang, we hope to reach international audiences, including researchers interested in neo-Kantianism. Most of the literature on this issue has been published in German.

The Institute of Philosophy in the University of Silesia is one of the world-known centres concerned with neo-Kantianism. Those centres, having suffered years of neglect, are enjoying a renaissance in Europe and elsewhere. Germany, the womb of neo-Kantianism, persistently refused to acknowledge that movement, as most of the neo-Kantian philosophers were of Jewish origin. During the Nazi period research into neo-Kantianism could not, for obvious reasons, be conducted, and following WWII, for less obvious reasons, Germany repressed much of its own tragic history, including some glorious aspects of its past. That is, perhaps, why research concerned with neo-Kantianism emerged in the 1990s, and mostly outside Germany: in Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Poland. The
Institute of Philosophy in the University of Silesia in Katowice has substantially contributed to the current research. Its crucial conclusion is that neo-Kantianism constitutes an original and ground-breaking mode of critical philosophy and it is much more than just a reconstruction of Immanuel Kant’s thinking.

[1] A.J.
