Obci\u0105\u017cenie kognitywne jest ogromne, a decyzje trzeba podejmowa\u0107 w u\u0142amkach sekund. Jakby tego by\u0142o ma\u0142o, niekt\u00f3rzy m\u00f3wcy mog\u0105 doprawdy doprowadzi\u0107 t\u0142umacza do za\u0142amania nerwowego. Przyk\u0142adem mo\u017ce by\u0107 dobrze znany ze swojej ekscentryczno\u015bci Janusz Korwin-Mikke (JKM), wybrany na europos\u0142a w okr\u0119gu \u015bl\u0105skim w 2014 roku. Nie tylko m\u00f3wi on z szybko\u015bci\u0105 karabinu maszynowego i u\u017cywa daleko odbiegaj\u0105cego od idea\u0142u angielskiego, ale tak\u017ce prezentuje swoje bardzo radykalne, kontrowersyjne pogl\u0105dy.<\/p>\n Korpus wszystkich 191 przem\u00f3wie\u0144 JKM z debat plenarnych PE (wersje polskie, angielskie i niemieckie) mo\u017ce pos\u0142u\u017cy\u0107 do eksploracji granic mo\u017cliwo\u015bci t\u0142umaczenia symultanicznego. W artykule za pomoc\u0105 analizy dyskursu zbadano wypowiedzi rasistowskie i ksenofobiczne, na przyk\u0142ad zawieraj\u0105ce s\u0142ownictwo takie jak niggers<\/em> i Negroes<\/em>, czy te\u017c tezy typu zalew Europy<\/em> \u015bmieciem ludzkim<\/em> albo nasi wrogowie s\u0105 w meczetach.<\/em> Analiza zgromadzonego materia\u0142u pokazuje, \u017ce podej\u015bcie t\u0142umaczy do dyskursu rasistowskiego jest niekonsekwentne. Stosowana jest szeroka gama strategii, od r\u00f3\u017cnego stopnia \u0142agodzenia wypowiedzi, poprzez t\u0142umaczenie \u201ewierne\u201d, a\u017c do eskalowania rasizmu. Najcz\u0119\u015bciej obserwowanym efektem jest lekkie z\u0142agodzenie, na przyk\u0142ad poprzez zastosowanie s\u0142owa Murzyn<\/em>, kt\u00f3re w polszczy\u017anie jest kontrowersyjne, ale z pewno\u015bci\u0105 nie tak obel\u017cywe, jak s\u0142ownictwo oryginalne. Bardziej subtelny, implicytny rasizm praktycznie zawsze zupe\u0142nie znika w t\u0142umaczeniu.<\/p>\n W kolejnych artyku\u0142ach, kt\u00f3re uka\u017c\u0105 si\u0119 w roku 2021, autorka skupia si\u0119 na seksizmie JKM (np. kobiety musz\u0105 zarabia\u0107 mniej ni\u017c m\u0119\u017cczy\u017ani, bo s\u0105 s\u0142absze, s\u0105 mniejsze i s\u0105 mniej inteligentne<\/em>) oraz jego dyskursie antyunijnym (np. uwa\u017cam, \u017ce Unia Europejska musi by\u0107 zniszczona<\/em>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>[\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”ENGLISH” tab_id=”1614086784868-ef320eca-57c6″]\r\n Article \u201cHow much noise can you make through an interpreter? A case study on racist discourse in the European Parliament\u201d published in Interpreting<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The functioning of the supranational democracy in the form of the European Union largely depends on translation and interpreting. We may observe the fascinating work of simultaneous interpreters during plenary debates of the European Parliament (EP), which are available on-line. Each contribution sounds in 24 language versions: the original one (in the speaker\u2019s native language or another official EU language of his\/her choice) and in 23 interpretations into all the other EU languages.<\/p>\n Simultaneous interpreting is the most challenging type of translation, with the interpreter working under extreme cognitive load. Decisions have to be taken in split seconds. On top of that, some speakers are simply a nervous breakdown waiting to happen. Among them is Janusz Korwin-Mikke (JKM), a populist right-wing Polish politician elected to the EP in 2014. The challenges he made the EP interpreters face include not only breakneck speaking speed and decisively non-native, hardly comprehensible English, but also very controversial content.<\/p>\n A complete collection of JKM\u2019s 191 contributions to the plenary debates (Polish, English and German versions) may enable us to explore the limits of feasibility in interpreting. Using discourse analysis, the article focuses on JKM\u2019s racism and xenophobia, including vocabulary such as niggers <\/em>and Negroes <\/em>or statements to the effect that Europe is flooded with human garbage, <\/em>or our enemies are in mosques, in the mosque of Paris, in the mosque of Marseilles. <\/em>The analysis reveals that the approach by interpreters to such racist sentiments is inconsistent, ranging from radical or slight mitigation, through \u201cfaithful\u201d rendition, to strengthening. The most likely effect is that JKM\u2019s racist discourse becomes somewhat diluted in the interpretations, for instance through the use of the word Murzyn<\/em>, which is controversial in Polish, but not a racial slur.
