Professor Swales, the holder of honoris causa<\/em> doctorate from the University of Silesia in Katowice in 2015, shaped applied linguistics for over 60 years developing genre analysis, ESP and EAP theory.\u00a0 Associated for over 40 years with the University of Michigan in the US, where he taught academic writing and academic genre theory, until his last days he remained academically active organising online tutorials for students and managing the Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English. As recently as three months ago, he was considering the possibility of running such a session for philology students in Sosnowiec, \u201conce he overcomes his health problem.\u201d His output includes more than a hundred articles and more than 20 monographs, among which are such seminal works as Genre Analysis: English in Academic and Research Settings<\/em> (1990), Research Genres: Explorations and Applications<\/em> (2004) and Aspects of Article Introductions<\/em> (Michigan, 2011). An avid lepidopterologist and ornithologist, but above all, a constant source of inspiration and encouragement to anyone who turned to him for advice, both as a scholar and a colleague.
