On 1 October 2019, the Faculty of Science and Technology began operating. The newly created faculty includes two organisational units that previously operated as the Faculty of Computer Science and Materials Science and the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The decision to establish a new faculty is related to enactment by the Senate of the University of Silesia on 28 May 2019 of a new university statute, which is the most important legal act adapting internal regulations to the requirements of the new Law on Higher Education and Science. The changes introduced at the University of Silesia are aimed at strengthening the university’s research and teaching position, consolidating the best research teams and integrating scientific and economic environments around key issues for the development of the Polish economy, as well as improving the image of the existing faculties at the University of Silesia among potential students and employers interested in employing graduates.

The Faculty of Science and Technology is located in three cities — in Katowice, Chorzów and Sosnowiec. There are six scientific institutes operating within its structure.
