Through science, technology and collaboration, we are changing the world for the better

In 2015, leaders from 193 UN member countries signed the document “Transforming Our World: 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” This document contains 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that identify areas of critical importance to humanity and our planet: people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership.

The Sustainable Development Goals are an action plan for the transformation of the world in which the needs of the present generation can be met in a sustainable manner, with respect for the environment and taking into account the needs of future generations. Both the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN and the University of Silesia in Katowice support the implementation of SDGs.

In “CERN – fully engaged with the Sustainable Development Goals“, published in 2017, Charlotte Lindberg Warakaulle, CERN’s Director of International Relations, describes CERN’s commitment to supporting the SDGs in the context of fulfilling CERN’s core mission. CERN contributes to the five Sustainable Development Goals:

  • 3 – Good health and quality of life,
  • 4 – Good quality education,
  • 9 – Innovation, industry, infrastructure,
  • 16 – Peace, justice and strong institutions,
  • 17 – Partnerships for the goals.

The University of Silesia implements the mission of social responsibility of the university through its research, teaching and artistic activities. The research activity of University of Silesia has been included in five thematic groups defined as Priority Research Areas (PriorPOBs):

  • POB 1: Harmonious human development – concern for health protection and quality of life
  • POB 2: Modern materials and technologies and their socio-cultural implications
  • POB 3: Environmental and climate changes and related social challenges
  • POB 4: Humanities for the future – interdisciplinary research on culture and civilisation
  • POB 5: Research on fundamental properties of nature

Employees, students and doctoral students affiliated with the Silesian Alma Mater undertake many initiatives and projects that support the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They expand the boundaries of knowledge, create new technologies and introduce technological innovations for widely understood social needs, contributing to transforming the world for the better.
