Thought experiments based on physical principles are called, after Einstein, Gedankenexperiments. They are powerful tools able to change our understanding of basic concepts such as time and space. We will discuss spectacular Gedankenexperiments by Galileo, Einstein, and Hawking. We will consider the power of symmetries resulting in relations between physical systems and conservation laws and how symmetries explain the emergence of fundamental interactions (like electromagnetism).
