Degree programmes

Music Education, 1st cycle studies Music Education, 1st cycle studies

Music Education, 1st cycle studies – the degree programme is addressed to every graduate of a music school, as well as to people who have practical skills and theoretical knowledge at the level of a first-level music school, but do not have a diploma of its completion.
The curriculum is highly diverse and covers two basic areas in terms of major-specific content.
The first of them concerns issues related to the theory of music, the second – the development of practical skills (among others playing the piano, playing a selected instrument, voice emission, conducting, eurhythmics, choir, orchestra).
From the academic year 2023/2024, our degree programme will be conducted according to the new model of undergraduate education, where apart from the existing major modules, new open modules are introduced. Those enrich the major-specific education and combine it with knowledge from other disciplines at the University of Silesia.
We also give our students the opportunity to obtain full teacher qualifications in accordance with the requirements of teaching standards.
The proposed curriculum offer also allows for choosing a major – Eurhythmics in Child Education and Instrumental and Vocal Bands in Popular and Classical Music.
Graduates of Music Education – 1st cycle studies may find employment as music animators in various types of educational and cultural institutions; organisers of festivals and other music events; conductors of musical ensembles; in various types of artistic activity; conducting classes in institutions offering eurhythmics classes.

Music Education, 2nd cycle studies Music Education, 2nd cycle studies

Music Education, 2nd cycle studies – the degree programme is addressed to graduates of Bachelor’s degree studies in the same and related fields, as well as graduates of other degree programmes who have practical skills and theoretical knowledge at the level of a first-level music school.
The educational offer assumes the implementation of modules on issues in theoretical music subjects, as well as teaching practical skills (e.g. playing a selected instrument, improvisation, singing, conducting, composition and arrangement, choir, orchestra).
A separate block consists of subjects allowing to obtain full teacher qualifications.
Moreover, modules broadening general humanities knowledge and foreign languages supplement the curriculum.
The curriculum offers majors under which students may pursue education corresponding to one’s specialist interests: Music
Education and Therapy in Special Education; Popular Music Production and Performance; Group Performance Practice.
Graduates can deal with: music education at all levels of education, music animation conducted in various types of educational and
cultural institutions, organisation and management of festivals and other music events, running music bands, conducting various types of artistic activities, including entertainment, working in institutions providing music therapy classes.

Music in Multimedia, 1st and 2nd cycle studies Music in Multimedia, 1st and 2nd cycle studies

Music in Multimedia, 1st and 2nd cycle studies – the Music in Multimedia degree programme is implemented in the form of two-cycle full-time studies with a practical profile.
1st cycle studies (Bachelor’s degree) last six semesters.
The proposed curriculum in the Music in Multimedia degree programme includes the possibility of choosing optional modules as part of the educational path related to creating sound in computer games or composing music in audio-visual arts.
Thus, this degree programme is addressed to people with broad interests in creating and processing music and sound.
It prepares specialists in composition and arrangement, methods of digital sound recording, digital processing, spatial sound, voice recording and processing, MIDI hardware and software, as well as sound post-production in virtual reality, e.g. in video games and educational programmes.
The degree programme also prepares for work as an author of music illustration (author of the musical layer) for the needs of audio-visual productions, with particular emphasis on audio-visual projects – network, television and short film forms.
The 2nd cycle studies offer two majors:
Video Game Sound, and Music Composition in Audio-visual Arts.
The aim is to educate graduates able to professionally perform the craft and broadly understood compositional activities in audio-visual arts, prepared for independent, original creative activity.
The curriculum of the Music
in Multimedia degree programme contains a number of practical classes on creating music for multimedia.
The graduate acquires basic skills in composition, arrangement, instrumentation, recording techniques and the necessary general knowledge of music.

Graphic Arts (five-year long-cycle studies) Graphic Arts (five-year long-cycle studies)

Graphic Arts (five-year long-cycle studies) – the modern study programme has been developed taking into account the needs of comprehensive artistic development and the requirements of the labour market.
It provides education in arts with an emphasis on graphic arts.
The acquired qualifications enable taking up creative challenges in graphic design and artistic graphics.
The five-year studies allow the development of creative interests in various fields of contemporary graphics — from the classic techniques of printmaking, through digital graphics and information technologies, to the art of comics, from designing publications and illustrations through modern advertising techniques to multimedia activities.
The development of a graphic artist/designer is supported by a full spectrum of general art subjects: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, knowledge of culture, art history, and contemporary art.
Most of the courses conducted as part of the degree programme are practical in nature.
After the second year of studies, students choose one of two majors within the degree programme: Artistic Graphics or Graphic Design.

Fine Arts Education, 1st and 2nd cycle studies Fine Arts Education, 1st and 2nd cycle studies

Fine Arts Education, 1st and 2nd cycle studies – the degree programme guarantees obtaining the skills and knowledge of a qualified artist-creator, capable of independently taking up artistic challenges and creatively solving various artistic issues.
In addition, education is focused on shaping conscious recipients of art and design who are able to express reasoned critical opinions and educate others in this area.
The basis of the curriculum is the holistic shaping of students’ skills, knowledge and competencies in the field of art.
The curriculum is part of the concept of universal education, not limited strictly to a selected field.
Despite choosing a specific major, students are ready to take up challenges in the broadly understood artistic education.
Graduates of the 2nd cycle studies are equipped with teaching qualifications in accordance with the teacher education standards or competencies enabling them to work as arts managers.
Graduates are prepared to undertake creative professional work as an animator of creative activities in centres and institutions of culture, art and extracurricular education, in the mass media, as well as in promotional and advertising structures. Depending on the chosen course block, graduates can engage in business or work as teachers.

Games and Virtual Reality Design Games and Virtual Reality Design

Games and Virtual Reality Design – the mission of the degree programme is to educate a creator-designer on a high intellectual and artistic level, with extensive knowledge of digital culture, with competencies in game design.
The implementation of the curriculum takes place on various levels, combining university education with business expertise, looking for the most effective form of experience exchange.
For this purpose, the team of academic teachers and specialists from the gaming industry cooperates in search of the most appropriate forms of teaching and apprenticeship implementation.
New Media
The degree programme is based on three pillars constituting the main educational balance:
– development of manual skills, shaping art workshop skills necessary for expression and communication in the visual sphere in projects related to game design,
– practical science related to game development technology.
Classes cover the basics of design and learning programmes in specialised areas such as art direction, concept art, storyboard, environment art, level design, 3D modelling and texturing, 2D and 3D animation.
An integral part of this module is the basics of programming and implementation in the game engine environment,
– theoretical learning, expanding knowledge on issues related to the interactive entertainment industry (games, films, VR, AR, new media), history of art and culture, copyright, perception and the language of visual communication in the form of lectures and exercises, foreign languages.
Graduates are conscious creators and visionaries capable of implementing ambitious and original projects.
Knowledge, practical skills and experience allow you to develop your own creative potential and work in a team.

Pedagogy – the choice of major is an important element in pedagogical studies.
REMEMBER: specialising in a specific pedagogical area translates into specific professional opportunities.
A wide educational offer within the field of pedagogy has been included in individual majors.

Pre-School Education and Early School Education Pre-School Education and Early School Education

Pre-School Education and Early School Education – students learn, experience, implement in practice and shape relations with the social environment on the basis of the basics and in-depth theoretical and practical content (methodical, including teaching) in the field of general and major-specific modules.
In the field of pedagogy, content is implemented in accordance with the adopted learning outcomes.
In terms of the learning outcomes and knowledge, students learn about pedagogy as a field of science, along with its connections with other scientific sub-disciplines.
They know elementary and in-depth pedagogical terminology, theories of upbringing, learning and teaching.
They know theories of human development in the course of life.
They have basic knowledge of the structure and functions of the educational system and its participants.
They have a structured knowledge of ethical principles and standards.
In terms of learning outcomes in the area of skills, graduates are able to observe, investigate and draw conclusions from various areas of pedagogical activity.
They can study the pre-school, school and social environment of a child and a student.
They have developed communication skills and
are able to develop their professional skills.
In the area of learning outcomes concerning social competencies, they are aware of the ethical dimension of scientific research and the implementation of pedagogical practice.

Special Education Special Education

Special Education – as part of the major, students acquire competencies related to care, upbringing, education and therapy to work with people with disabilities and/or social maladjustment.
The general assumptions, goals, forms of organisation of classes, assumed competencies (especially in connection with social needs and potential places / positions) mentioned above in the general characteristics of the major are focused on working with people with various disabilities.
As part of the major (alongside the acquisition and expansion of knowledge and competencies in general humanities, including general pedagogy and those concerning general issues of special education), students acquire:
in-depth knowledge of disability, development, diagnosis, education, therapy of people with disabilities and/or social maladjustment;
extended knowledge about medical, mental, social and cultural mechanisms of functioning of people with disabilities and/or social maladjustment;
specialist methodological competencies (including communication) within the special pedagogy methodology;
the ability to create an environment conducive to the development of people with disabilities and/or social maladjustment;
specialist competencies required in rehabilitation, education and therapy.

Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology

Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology – the degree programme focuses on the most influential cognitive trends in the social sciences and humanities in the 21st century.
They allow students to understand the functioning not only of traditional or non-European societies but also the mechanisms of all cultures.
Students gain skills related to the study and interpretation of contemporary social and cultural phenomena, especially those concerning mechanisms governing the process of globalisation and characterising multicultural communities in the postmodern era.
The curriculum enables understanding of many key phenomena in the modern world.
Among many detailed issues, students acquire knowledge about the ethnology of Poland and Europe, the culture of the so-called Global South and selected aspects of cultural ecology, anthropology of migration, anthropology of gender and sexuality, and cultural heritage.
An important element of modernity is the media (especially the so-called new media), within which cultural awareness is shaped in a specific way (the curriculum includes modules on the specificity of the Internet, social media, gaming, e-sport).
The studies have a practical dimension thanks to field studies conducted in various cultural areas in Poland and abroad, during which students learn the necessary skills and proper methodological approach.

Socio-cultural Animation with Cultural Education Socio-cultural Animation with Cultural Education

Socio-cultural Animation with Cultural Education – an interdisciplinary degree programme for people who want to plan and organise cultural and artistic events.
They allow students to develop individual interests and abilities and gain experience related to their own creative activity, organising cultural events, various forms of volunteering and social activity.
The curriculum covers the basics of philosophy, sociology (sociology of culture), pedagogy, cultural knowledge, contemporary culture, familiarising with the specificity of individual artistic disciplines (literature, theatre, film, art, music, dance), introduction to the issues of media, management in culture, cultural heritage.
Students have the opportunity to choose the profile of workshop classes from various fields of creativity, and participate in field classes implemented in the form of apprenticeships and creativity and research camps.

Cultural Education Cultural Education

Cultural Education – the degree programme for people interested in cultural and artistic activities, inspiring and organising contacts with culture in its various fields, and researching the determinants of participation in culture.
The curriculum pays particular attention to working with the public in cultural institutions, the ability to recognise the cultural and educational potential of various environments, creating conditions for cooperation and building networks of entities related to culture and education.
The curriculum includes theoretical, practical, workshop and design classes.
Students are led by tutors who help them to build an individual learning path (a selection of classes to choose from, inclusion in research, consulting institutions for the implementation of internships).
