The inauguration of the academic year 2025/2026 of the Doctoral School took place on Friday, October 3, 2025, at spinPLACE, the building of the University of Silesia in Katowice. In the program: inaugural speech by Vice-Rector for Science, Agnieszka Turska-Kawa prof. US, speech by the Dean of the Doctoral School, prof. Alina Świeściak-Fast and a speech by the Deputy Dean of the Doctoral School, prof. Michał Baczyński and Chairman of the Doctoral Council Michał Gębicki, M.A. During the ceremony, doctoral students were matriculated. Inaugural lecture entitled “Is there one correct interpretation possible?” was delivered by prof. Zygmunt Tobor.

Registration for classes via the USOS system for the upcoming semester/year will take place according to the following schedule:

1. Registration for core classes in the curriculum: September 30 (Tuesday), 9:00 PM – October 3 (Friday), 11:59 PM. Registration includes the following classes:

  • Research Methodology (for first-year students)
  • Teaching in higher educational schools (for first-year students)
  • English Language Course (for first-year students)
  • Academic English (for all) – class groups assigned to specific disciplines
  • Intellectual Property Law and Copyright (for all except PhD students in artistic disciplines) – groups assigned to specific areas, with a separate English-language group.

These classes begin the week of October 6-10, unless otherwise scheduled. If any doctoral student needs to catch up on classes from the first year, please contact the Doctoral School office by email.

2. Registration for facultative and specialized classes: October 7 (Tuesday), 9:00 PM – October 9 (Thursday), 11:59 PM.                                                                                                                                                                              Please note that registration for facultative and specialized classes covers both the winter and summer semesters. It will not be possible to register for classes in the summer semester that are not offered during this registration period.

Doctoral School of the University of Silesia in Katowice announces the opening of admission for the joint dual degree doctoral program of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Sapienza University in Rome in the field of literary studies, cultural studies, linguistics, and translation studies in English.

This admission is open to doctoral students newly admitted to the Doctoral School and those completing their first year.

Necessary documents

By October 9, 2025, Candidates are required to:

  • demonstrate their proficiency in English at the C1 level by submitting ONE of the following documents: a) an MA diploma in English, b) a CAE certificate or an analogous certificate confirming the Candidate’s command of English at the C1 level, or c) a diploma of graduation from a recognized foreign university in which the language of instruction is English;
  • fill the application form to provide a description of the dual degree project and a list of academic achievements achievements-Sapienza Research-project-SAPIENZA
  • submit the supervisor’s letter of reference in support of the Candidate’s application to join the dual degree program.

 

The interview will be held in English on October 13, 2025, at 13.00 on the Teams platform.

The Candidates will be interviewed and assessed by an examination committee chaired by the discipline coordinator for humanities, theology and arts and composed of four full or associate professors (“professore ordinario” or “professore associato” on the Italian side and “doktor habilitowany” or “profesor tytularny” on the Polish side), representing the disciplines of English Literary and Cultural Studies as well as Translation Studies and Linguistics: three examiners shall represent the University of Silesia and one shall represent the Sapienza University in Rome.

More about the program

The joint program will be realized in the co-tutelle formula, with two supervisors. In order to obtain a doctoral diploma from the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Sapienza University in Rome, in the course of the program, the doctoral student is required to spend at least 5 months at the partner University under the academic supervision of the co-director of the thesis. Each year, doctoral students must pay an initial fee, but they will be able to receive an additional scholarship for the time spent in Rome.

Doctoral students are responsible for obtaining funds for mobility. Thay may apply for funds from the PROM program, Erasmus+ scholarship offer, and other forms of support available at the University of Silesia.

The PhD candidate writes the thesis in English and there will be one public defense in that language.

Effective June 18th 2025, the University Council of Doctoral Student Government announces a competition for doctoral students and doctoral organizations of the University of Silesia for funds. The maximum amount of funding is PLN 5,000 and PLN 10,000, respectively.

The competition funds are used to support such activities and projects aimed at activating the environment of doctoral students, improving the quality of their scientific research, publishing their results or popularizing scientific knowledge.

Applications can be submitted until July 2nd  2025 at: doktoranci@us.edu.pl . In addition,  until June 25th , we will accept your applications for consultation for formal errors with the possibility of sending them back for correction.

We also inform you that due to the amendment of the Regulations on the distribution of funds at the disposal of the Doctoral Student Council of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the repeal of § 3(5) of the Regulations by a resolution of the URSD dated February 27, 2024, applicants for funding from the URSD budget do not need to show previous application for funds in the Doctoral School competition.

In addition, we remind you:

-The form for individual applications is Annex No.1 and for academic organisations is Annex No.2;

-In Section I of Appendix 1 dedicated to year of study it is required to indicate current year of studies, not the academic year;

-The declaration of consent to the processing of personal data requires, in addition to the date and signature, the selection of the appropriate option from I consent/ I do not consent;

-Signatures on all documents may be either handwritten or through a qualified electronic signature.

The Doctoral School of the University of Silesia in Katowice invites international doctoral students to participate in the PROM – International Academic Exchange Programme 2024.

The aim of the project is to support international mobility and enhance participants’ academic competencies through short-term educational and exchange activities organized by the University of Silesia. Each visit must be related to the scientific development goals specified in the submitted application documents.

We’ve got it! The first edition of the Three Minute Thesis® competition in English is launching in the Silesian Voivodeship. We invite you to participate in the contest and tell us about your doctoral research in just 3 minutes!

Three Minute Thesis® (3MT®) is a global competition in science communication, licensed by the University of Queensland (Australia). The competition in Polish has been organized by the Science Popularization Centre since 2017, and this year, for the first time, we are introducing its English-language edition.

Who can participate?

Three Minute Thesis® – Polish your English! is open to all PhD students from universities and research institutes in the Silesian Voivodeship.

This is a competition for people who wish to present their PhD thesis in English. Participants must explain their dissertation topics in a clear and engaging way – in just three minutes – for a broad audience.

Competition schedule

  • until April 22 – submit a 3-minute video of presenting the key aspects of your doctoral research,
  • until April 28 – the jury will evaluate the video submissions and select 20 participants for the elimination round,
  • May 10 – elimination in the New Technologies Centre, Konarskiego 22B, Gliwice). The jury will select 10 finalists,
  • June 6 – FINAL.

How to enter?

You must be a PhD student at a university or a branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences in the Silesian Voivodeship.
