GAME LAB project

INTERNATIONAL LABORATORY
FOR GAME STUDIES
AND DESIGN

Game design and research is a dynamically developing and unique field of academic and artistic activity. It combines various competencies, modern digital technologies, and humanistic view of interaction, narrative, identity, and perception with social responsibility.

Together we have created a space for artists and researchers, academics and students, so that they can design and analyse games together. This space is an international lab where all project participants take up challenges related to communication, integrity, culture, art, technology, science, and partnership.

The core of this initiative is the International Game Lab Challenge, international workshops for students working in teams under the supervision of mentors from partner universities from all around the world.

The project was co-funded by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange. The coordinator of the project is Prof. Małgorzata Łuszczak.

“Vera” is a transmedia installation based on a short story by Katherine Mansfield, a New Zealand writer of the modernist period. The installation consists of six elements:

  • 14-minute traditional video;
  • 18-minute 360° video;
  • volumetric video (holographic video);
  • 20-minute radio play;
  • the book The Dill Pickle by Katherine Mansfield,
  • virtual reality installation, in which a viewer can wander around the reconstructed film set, interacting with the film props and discovering details that enrich the already known story.

During the realisation of the project, its leader, Prof. Krzysztof Pietroszek, cooperated with an international student team. The following graduates of the Game and Virtual Reality Design programme at the University of Silesia in Katowice were involved in the works: Adrian Kuś, Paulina Rudzińska and Mateusz Jaworzyn, who designed the elements of the virtual reality in 3D. The Director of the GAME LAB Design Centre, Prof. Małgorzata Łuszczak, was the External Faculty Fellows at the Institute for IDEAS in the American University (Washington, D.C.).
