On 3–4 June 2024, the University of Silesia in Katowice had the honour of hosting the international SHE Academy 2024 seminar “Research at and with Schools.”

The event was coordinated on behalf of the University by:

  • Assoc. Prof.Karina Leksy, PhD (lead coordinator, Institute of Pedagogy, Faculty of Social Sciences),
  • Assoc. Prof. Grzegorz Gawron, PhD (Institute of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences),
  • Zuzanna Neuve-Église, PhD (Institute of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences).

Co-organised with the Schools for Health in Europe Network (SHE), the event focused on research and initiatives conducted within school environments and in close collaboration with schools. Participants included renowned researchers, national and regional coordinators of Health-Promoting Schools, early-career scholars and PhD candidates, teachers, educators, and even students actively involved in health promotion efforts.

The two-day event featured an intensive and content-rich programme of presentations, workshops, and discussion sessions. Participants had the opportunity to build international partnerships and exchange experiences related to promoting health and well-being in school settings.

One of the main conclusions of the meeting was that effective health promotion in schools requires a holistic approach – one that embraces physical, mental and social well-being, and is grounded in the implementation of effective public policies. The discussions underscored the importance of integrating health education into the curriculum, creating supportive school environments and engaging families and communities in health-related initiatives.

The presented research showcased innovative strategies and interventions that can be implemented in schools to address various health challenges, considering the needs of all members of the school community. The evidence-based practices shared during the event are expected to serve as valuable resources for educators and policymakers in the field of school health promotion.

In addition, the conference highlighted the importance of collaboration. By working together – across disciplines, sectors, and countries – It is possible to create more comprehensive and effective approaches to school health promotion, thus ensuring a better future for children, adolescents and adults alike. The partnership within the international SHE Network is essential to achieving this mission.
