This is most visible in the European Union. But would you have known that NATO, for instance, is also an example of European integration? Very basically speaking, behind this term lies the voluntary cooperation of States in a multitude of fields, such as politics, economy, sports or culture, in various for a: international organisations, ad hoc coalitions of States or informal groups. We want to dive a bit deeper into that topic together with you and find out why European integration exists, why it matters and how it is carried out, focussing on the European Union. In order to do that, we will take a look at historical ideas and the development of our subject matter – it is much older that just 75 years! We will also cover – in tiny bits and pieces – politics, philosophy, economy, sociology and – given both lecturers, Christina and Sebastian, are lawyers – a bit of law (just a bit). There is nothing you need to know in advance, you can participate in this course being an absolute beginner. We are very happy to welcoming you to this course and meeting an international class! For this aim, the students will use libraries such as OpenGL and Vulkan, and the GLSL programming language. Topics will include some general information like the concept of CIA (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability), cybersecurity pillars: people, process, technology, elements of cryptography – the difference between passwords and passphrases, the strength of passwords, types of attacks in cyberspace, type of attackers, 1-, 2- or 3-factor authentication. Hands-on (practice) will involve the student in different activities. The students will try to crack passwords (checking password strength), use password managers, ciphers, and deciphering texts. They will also use steganography to hide a message, VPNs to secure transmissions, and hashes to provide data integrity. They should also know the elements of social engineering and recognize different types of cyberattacks. They also should know onion routing and how to use it for retaining (relative) anonymity. | |

This course will cover the following: the color and the composition, the basics of perception, principles of effective data visualization, types of charts (type of chart and when to use), elements of data storytelling. The final assignment requires the students to put all they learned together: prepare their own data story – with appropriate charts and visuals. Current trends in the development of programming languages, apart from improving code efficiency and increasing the possibilities, are also aimed at facilitating the writing of programs. A simplification for programmers is the simplification of programming languages, and the possibility of using numerous frameworks. One of the languages that from the beginning was focused on the ease of writing programs and simplified the structure of the code is Python. During the lectures, students will be introduced to the basics of this language. The lectures will also discuss the advantages of the Python language and its possibilities, both in terms of creating advanced desktop programs and web applications. Additional possibilities of the Python language, such as the possibility of data analysis and presentation, will also be discussed. | |

Against this background, companies are faced with the question: How can competitive advantages be achieved and maintained in the “age of digital transformation”? The theory-based and action-oriented course gives students an insight into digital core technologies that drive the digital transformation of society and equips them with digital decision-making strategies and frameworks.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to (1) explain why and how digital technologies have an impact on companies’ business models, (2) explain why and how companies effectively integrate digital technologies and some are more successful than others, (3) systematically choose between different approaches to assess the potential of digital technologies and to implement and use them in companies.

| USaar | Computer Ethics | 3 | AC | Online; asynchronous | 11/04/2022 – 22/07/2022 | Many computer scientists will be confronted with morally difficult situations at some point in their career – be it in research, in business, or in industry. Computer Ethics equips you with the crucial assets enabling you to recognize such situations, and to devise ways to arrive at a justified moral judgment regarding the question of what you are permitted to do and what you should better not do. For that, you will be made familiar with moral theories from philosophy, as well as different Codes of Ethics for computer scientists. Since one can quickly get lost when talking about ethics and morals, it is especially important to talk and argue clearly and precisely. In order to prepare you for that, Computer Ethics trains your formal and informal argumentation skills enabling you to argue beyond the level of everyday discussions at bars and parties. In the end, you will be able to assess a morally controversial topic from computer science on your own and give a convincing argument for your assessment.
Computer Ethics is intended to always be as clear, precise, and analytic as possible. What you won’t find here is the meaningless bla-bla, needlessly poetic language, and vague and wordy profundity that some people tend to associate with philosophy. You will, however, get many interesting insights into philosophy, ethics, and computer science – or so we have been told. |

The course is ideally divided into two parts. The first part deals with entrepreneurship. After clarifying what entrepreneurship is, we will focus on the techniques and the strategies for identifying opportunities and generating ideas. We will then move to the feasibility analysis to then outline the main structure of a business plan. We will then concentrate on the characteristics of the founding team and on some financial aspects related to the entrepreneurial process. A deepening on the factors determining the growth of the Start-Up firms concludes the first part of the course. The second part of the course is practice based and deals with Business Model Innovation. In this part, attending students will be divided in groups and will work on the development of a business model in collaboration with the Contamination LAB of the University of Trieste. |

Similar to a fish which has little to say about water, the users of the internet lack the ability to take a critical look at the service which is the central communicational axis of their existence. This course will provide an opportunity for an academical inquiry into the phenomenon of the internet by analysing the main sociocultural and philosophical aspects of it. The course will cover both topics which are common to internet debates in the public sphere, such as social networks, memes, piracy or fake news, as well as more philosophical internet discourses like the transmutation of time and space, internet hierarchies, commercialisation, and internet art. With the help of this course, students will be able to raise problematic questions about various aspects of internet culture and will become competent enough to take a critical look at this technology and its impact on their daily lives. The exam will take the form of short essay, while for the homework students will have a chance to produce a creative project which would aesthetically elaborate on some of the topics covered through the course. The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the main elements of Internet culture and to provide the ability to thoroughly analyse the dominant cultural practices on the Internet and their socio-cultural impact on society.
Students will be able to: • Specify the main socio-cultural effects generated by the Internet; • Evaluate the social and economic problems created by the main Internet services; • Evaluate the specifics of online social networks and the dominant cultural practices in them and their impact on society; • Evaluate the impact of digital piracy on the field of creative industries; • Describe the specifics of the technical Internet infrastructure, its technological development; and future prospects of Web 3.0; • Reveal the critique of the network society encoded in internet art. |

Notions of multiple identities, self and other, stereotypes and prejudice will be discussed. The aim is also to acquire knowledge and skills in analysing of different discourses in the context of intercultural interactions.
The training is based on the application of various interactive methods, as during the lectures students get acquainted with basic concepts related to the issues, and during the seminars through working with key documents, creating versions of their own texts and media products, presentations on the studied issues, solving cases students apply in practice what they have learned.

The course presents an overview on the topic of language policies in the context of the EU. It is divided into two parts. The first dealing with issues related to the issue of language policies in general covering the themes of language origins, language families, languages of wider communication (lingua franca) and languages in Europe. Language policy is considered from the perspective of planning of language status, language corpus, language education as well as discourses about language, language ideologies and attitudes towards language. The specific national and European context constitutes the second part of the course. It covers topics concerning language and nation building, language and culture, respect for linguistic diversity, language rights, EU institutional multilingualism and plurilingualism of individuals. The Council of Europe and the EU policy of multilingualism are presented through policy documents, academic papers, language and language competence survey (Eurobarometer, Special surveys) sand EU programmes and projects in the area of languages and culture.
Upon completion of the course the students will demonstrate understanding on multilingualism and language policy and will be able to conduct their own small-scale survey on the issues of language policy in European context. |

The current course is at the “advanced” level, aiming to provide knowledge and practical skills for the development of geodatabases, analytical methods in GIS, as well as the ability to publish and access geospatial information via the Internet. |

Spring term | This course builds on the theoretical knowledge of Landscape Science and introduces students to the methodology of complex spatial analyses, with an emphasis on landscape systematisation.
The main part of the course structure, and of the accompanying practical classes and seminars, is devoted to current forms of application of Landscape Ecology (approaches, methods, tools, information provision, interdisciplinary integration) in practice to solve important challenges of our time – natural, socio-cultural, economic. This includes: geo-ecological forecasting and the justification of long-term projections in Spatial Planning, Ecological Assessment and Strategic Planning, Landscape Multifunctionality and Ecosystem/Landscape Services, Geo-ecological Monitoring, the organization and management of Ecological Networks of Protected Sites. The selection of the analytical material underlying the lecture course, as well as in the formulation of the practical exercises and seminars, is further tailored to the possibilities of integrating the landscape perspective with current concepts (and their practical solutions) such as: Nature-Based Solutions, Multifactor Solutions, Green Policies, Integrated Resource Management, Circular Economy, Ecological Engineering, etc. |

The course objectives are achieved by developing argumentative skills through discussions applying the norms of language etiquette and strategies of non-verbal and intercultural communication, providing oral presentation and written commentary of the results from data analysis and visualization.
