Our society faces challenges of a magnitude and variety rarely seen before. New technologies, pollution, migration patterns, to just name a few, result in increasing pressure to transform present business models, structures and processes to meet these challenges. Within the disciplines’ innovation management and entrepreneurship, many strategies and instruments were developed to design products, services, processes and structures to realize novel ideas and enable change. Still, in the face of ecological, social and digital transformation, the respective models and instruments appear to fall short in enacting change, appropriate to the speed and significance of our challenges. One answer for the call of an adapted approach is knowledge entrepreneurship. The new concept aims to empower individuals to seek and implement transformational change. The lecture introduces state of the art innovation adoption models and innovation barriers. Subsequently, participants learn more about the concept of knowledge entrepreneurship and several strategies, which are developed and tested for the purpose of striving for transformation, are scrutinized.

This course is intended for Master students or students within certification programs such as the Europaicum/Transform4Europe

Learning objectives

The specific competencies students are expected to acquire in the process include:

(1) An understanding of the relevance and characteristics of innovation and the innovation adoption process,

(2) deep knowledge of knowledge entrepreneurship as instrument to foster transformation,

(3) the ability to consciously identify, evaluate and select opportunities for transformational change in one’s personal or professional environment

(4) the application of agile and/or design thinking approaches to purse identified opportunities.

ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR AND DESIGN

The concepts and ideas presented in the course provide a basis for an appraisal of contrasting perspectives on the structure, operation and management of organisations and interactions among people who work in them. It is hoped that this will encourage a greater level of awareness and sensitivity to organisational factors and management processes influencing the behaviour and performance of people at work. The underlying theme of the course is the need for organisational effectiveness based on an understanding of organisational behaviour, the people resource and the role of management as an integrating activity. Adopting a managerial perspective the course provides a clear focus of attention and helps to overcome any perceived distinction between organisational behaviour and organisational analysis.

PODCASTING AND VLOGGING FOR BEGINNERS
by Stuart Leslie Garlick

Podcasting is one of the fastest-growing forms of online content. Vlogging, meanwhile, can shed light on facts and topics that would otherwise remain hidden.

This course explores how to make podcasts and vlogs that are meaningful and interesting to a wide audience. Students will learn the practical skills needed to be able to make their own podcasts and vlogs, and they will also gain skills they can use in generating and creating original content.

With examples of successful content, the class will examine the value in podcasting and vlogging, why it has become so popular, and what skills are specific to the medium. The course will then give a thorough grounding in how to write, produce, and edit podcasts and vlogs, using readily available software, and hardware already available to the student.

Students will get the chance to work in small groups on their own podcast or vlog, using the skills they have learned. If a student does not enjoy public speaking or presenting, they are welcome to write or edit content instead of appearing on the programme.

Note: the student will NOT be asked to purchase any software subscriptions or new equipment in order to take part in this course. All that is needed is a normal computer and a phone with a free voice recorder app and camera.

Focus topics:

  • How to market yourself and your skills / interests through audio or video.
  • The basic free software needed, and how to use it, step-by-step from the start.
    Planning and scheduling programmes.
  • How to present a programme.
  • The best podcasts and vlogs, and why they have a significant audience.
  • Why podcasting and vlogging gives you an advantage in the arts and design world.
  • Create and share your own podcast or vlog and share it with the class, taking their suggestions on how to improve it.

There is no exam for this course – it will be continuously assessed based on students’ participation in lectures, and group work. Students will work on creating their own podcast or vlog as part of a small group, with part of the course assessment based on this being submitted to the lecturer, and presented to the rest of the group in the final lecture.

SPRACHEN, KULTUREN, (GRENZ-)RAUM

EUROPEAN INTEGRATION

European integration shapes all of our lives on a daily basis. This is most visible in the European Union. But would you have known that NATO, for instance, is also an example of European integration? Very basically speaking, behind this term lies the voluntary cooperation of States in a multitude of fields, such as politics, economy, sports or culture, in various for a: international organisations, ad hoc coalitions of States or informal groups. We want to dive a bit deeper into that topic together with you and find out why European integration exists, why it matters and how it is carried out, focussing on the European Union. In order to do that, we will take a look at historical ideas and the development of our subject matter – it is much older that just 75 years! We will also cover – in tiny bits and pieces – politics, philosophy, economy, sociology and – given both lecturers, Christina and Sebastian, are lawyers – a bit of law (just a bit). There is nothing you need to know in advance, you can participate in this course being an absolute beginner. We are very happy to welcoming you to this course and meeting an international class! Feel free to discuss with us on whatever you want to know more about, also ongoing issues and affairs you might have read about in the media.

LITHUANIAN HISTORY

Lithuanians, Poles, Belarusians, Ukrainians, Jews and many other nations coexisted in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Five hundred years of common statehood was halted by Russia. National movements that touched almost every nation in the region in the 19th century resulted in nation-stations that formed and thrived through the 20th century. How is the legacy of the Grand Duchy of Lithuanian being divided today? How and why is history teaching different in the schools of neighbouring states? Looking from this perspective, what is the context of contemporary propaganda wars and geopolitics tensions? Where are boundaries between national narratives and critical history, between story and science?

SCIENTIFIC WRITING

The main purpose of the course is to teach students how to write a scientific article in a formally and stylistically correct way. Each year, an open scientific problem will be chosen, whose precise formulation will be discussed in a collegial manner, as well as the construction of a rigorous sampling project and the acquisition of data by the students. The next step is focused on data processing. In this part, when necessary, the basics of multivariate analysis, classical statistics, and computer mapping will be provided. Students will need to learn how to use different packets of data processing programs. They will also be introduced to the writing style appropriate to a scientific article and will learn the basics of structuring a scientific article correctly. Finally, students will have to write individually a complete scientific article in English. The individual articles will be subjected to critical review by the whole group of students under the guidance of the teacher.

subject title
GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND CASE STUDIES OF PROTECTED AREAS

The discipline introduces students to current regional dimensions of contemporary environmental challenges in a diverse political, economic or geographical context directly linked to the problems of spatial planning, regional development, and territory management.

The lecture material places particular emphasis on regional solutions to global environmental problems. It draws attention to the potential of the new concept of “protected territories” in their renewed qualities of objects with innovative spatial-organizational structures, integrating functions (geopolitical, economic, socio-cultural, preserving biodiversity, and the gene pool). It also implements ideas of active business management approaches with the direct participation of the local population and, above all – as experimental sites of new resource management forms.

The selection of lectures and exercises includes analyzes of: “Transboundary parks” and their reflection on geopolitical conflicts, “Protected landscapes” and the active role of local business ventures, “Biosphere reserves” and the conservation of ecosystem services in support of human well-being (Ecosystem Services Concept), “Marine areas” and the management of genetic resources, the System of sites from the “World Cultural and Natural Heritage” and their importance, maintaining the traditions and identity of the regions.

The analytical material, which is the basis of this discipline, supports to a high degree a subsequent master’s specialization oriented to the theme of green policies, original nature-based solutions (Nature Based Solutions Concept), and other innovations for sustainable planning and management of territories and resources.

GIS APPLICATION IN MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic principles, technology and application of GIS in natural resource and environmental management. The emphasis of the lecture material is on the methodology for the creation, management and implementation of environmental GIS-projects and GIS-projects aimed at the rational use and conservation of components of the natural environment. The basic requirements for the hardware and software support of GIS-projects, as well as for the conceptual and logical organization of databases for environmental management are clarified. Criteria for the assessment of natural resources and the state of the environment, sources of environmental information and methods for its integration into GIS-projects are considered. A separate place is devoted to the possibilities of modeling and analytical functions of GIS in the inventory, assessment and forecasting of the state of the environment and individual types of natural resources – land, water, mineral, bioresources, etc. The features of expert systems and the possibilities for their integration in GIS are characterized. Students gain knowledge about the technology of development and use of object-oriented GIS in decision-making in environmental and natural resource management. With the help of numerous examples in a separate section, a critical analysis of the accumulated global experience in the development and implementation of environmentally oriented GIS projects is provided. Due to the practical orientation of the course, during the exercises students acquire skills in the use of specialized software products for the construction of GIS-projects in the field of environmental management.
