The summer school was financed as part of the project ‘Development of the internationalisation of the University of Silesia in Katowice through the Transform4Europe alliance’, co-financed by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) from European funds of the European Fund for Social Development 2021-2027 (FERS), NAWA project ‘Support for European University Alliances’, project number: BPI/WUE/2024/1/00021.
From 15–19 June 2026, the University of Alicante (Spain) hosted the international summer school “Artificial Intelligence, Media and Storytelling in Modern Education”, organised by the University of Silesia in Katowice in cooperation with the University of Alicante within the framework of the Transform4Europe (T4EU) Alliance.
The event brought together students from education-related degree programmes at the University of Silesia, alongside students from the University of Alicante. Over the course of five intensive days, participants explored the use of artificial intelligence in education, media literacy, and storytelling as a contemporary method of communication and teaching.
The programme included lectures, workshops, and field-based activities delivered by academic staff from both institutions. The Polish team consisted of Dr Monika Frania, Associate Professor at the University of Silesia, and Dr Karolina Skop, while the Spanish team included Professor Maria Felicidad Tabuenca Cuevas and Dr Javier Fernández Molina.
One of the key elements of the summer school was collaborative work in international project teams. Students produced short educational films presenting selected aspects of the culture, history and heritage of Alicante, as well as highlighting cooperation between the University of Silesia in Katowice and the University of Alicante. In developing their projects, participants employed both traditional storytelling techniques and AI-powered tools supporting scriptwriting, graphic design, narration, and video editing.
The intensive week of joint activities also provided an excellent opportunity to develop intercultural competences, teamwork skills, and communication in an international environment. During the event, participants were visited by representatives of the Faculty of Social Sciences, led by Dean Professor Małgorzata Myśliwiec, as well as representatives of the Transform4Europe Office and administrative staff from both the Faculty and the central administration of the University of Silesia.
The international summer school was another example of the dynamically developing cooperation between the University of Silesia and the University of Alicante. It followed a month-long academic placement undertaken by Dr Monika Frania, Associate Professor at the University of Silesia, at the Spanish university during the winter semester of the current academic year, as well as the visit of Professor Maria Tabuenca Cuevas as a visiting professor during the summer semester. The summer school also demonstrated that the future of education is built on openness, innovation, and intercultural dialogue.
