The Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Silesia in Katowice and the SPIN-Lab Centre for Microscopic Studies on Matter had the honor of hosting the MedSilesia Cluster as part of the inspiring “MedSilesia – Science for Business” initiative. During the study visit, which took place on March 12, 2024, we had the opportunity to present selected scientific and research areas being developed at the University and the capabilities of the apparatus gathered at the Center. During the tour of laboratories, our business partners from the Silesian Network of Medical Devices also had the opportunity to see the implementation of measurements of biomedical materials using microscopes and tomographs.
During the SPIN-Lab presentation, we focused on the challenges posed by medicine in its broadest sense, and the added value from using diverse microscopy techniques for soft matter imaging. The presentation of measurement methods focused on the possibility of correlating light microscopy with X-ray microtomography and electron microscopy coupled with spectroscopic analysis for imaging the structure of samples at the nanometer scale. The importance of image analysis and creating correlations of structure with the chemical composition of matter, as well as the complementarity of non-destructive and destructive methods in creating three-dimensional visualizations were also emphasized.
Talks held at the Center also covered issues of the principles of cooperation between business entities and scientific teams within the University, particularly in the provision of scientific and research services. The whole spectrum of possible forms and scopes of cooperation in areas relating to medicine was presented.
