Time for a quick recap of the workshops organized as part of the Seasonal School for PhD students and undergraduate students titled “Science for a Sustainable Now and Future” (https://us.edu.pl/event/szkola-sezonowa-dla-doktorantow-oraz-studentow-science-for-a-sustainable-now-and-future/), held on April 8–9.
We began with a presentation by Dr. Eng. Marcin Libera, Director of SPIN-Lab, who introduced participants to the history of the Center and the wide range of microscopy applications in industries such as medicine and engineering. Following the talk, our team of specialists conducted hands-on workshops showcasing the capabilities of our instrumentation.
The morning session focused on X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Participants had the opportunity to observe a wheat grain under SEM at magnifications of up to x5k and even x10k, and to conduct a detailed elemental analysis of a ferrogabbro rock sample. In the micro-CT section, they explored the internal structure of a twig and a wheat sample, and created 3D models of both objects.
The afternoon session was dedicated to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal microscopy. During the TEM workshop, participants were introduced to the basics of sample preparation and microscope operation, with the opportunity to try their hand at using the TEM under the guidance of our expert.
In the confocal microscopy workshop, participants learned about the fascinating applications of this technique, including the use of fluorescence. The session concluded with practical exercises, where participants could interact directly with the equipment.
We would like to sincerely thank all participants for joining us and the Seasonal School organizers for their collaboration. We look forward to future joint projects!
