SOFTWARE TESTER’S DAY

Save the date with our scientists

„Save the date” is a series of articles that have been written to celebrate various unusual holidays. The authors of the presented materials are students, doctoral students and employees of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Silesia.

Tomasz Wesołowski, MSc Eng. talks about how important, necessary, but also annoying the job of a software tester is.

Software tester’s day is celebrated in memory of 9 September 1947, when in the Mark II computer a bug was found – an actual bug which shorted out the relay, leading to the computer malfunction (photo) 😎

However, the term “bug” itself doesn’t come from IT slang, but from engineering jargon, and was used long before the “bug” was found in the Mark II computer.

And a tester… Well, it’s not an easy job. Teammates often “joke” that they’ve got a lot of extra work because of the testers.

Good testers even torture the tested program because they have to find all its weaknesses and faults – of course, everything is reported and the programmers have to correct it.

What’s more, you need to have certain predispositions and skillfully “pick on” the details – my students submitting their projects exactly know what I mean. 😁

But let’s face it – without Testers, probably more than one of us would have thrown the computer out of the window in an anger attack caused by errors. 😉

That’s why we reaaaly like Testers 😍 and please remember that not all the “bugs” are bad – some of them make our lives better. 😀
