This pilot study was a preparatory phase for the main study of the AstroMentalHealth project, which was subsequently conducted during the IGNIS mission. It was conducted during two 14-day analogue space missions at the LunAres research station in Poland. Nine analogue astronauts repeatedly assessed their experiences using technology, including their levels of technostress and emotional well-being related to technology. Their personal values were also assessed before the mission began.
The results showed that personal values can play a role in how people experience technology in challenging, isolated environments. Some values were associated with greater technostress, while others fostered a more positive experience of technology. Specifically, personal security and universalism related to concern for society were associated with higher levels of technostress during the mission, while attachment to tradition was associated with lower technostress and higher emotional well-being related to technology. The authors suggest that personal values can both facilitate and hinder human interaction with technology in a simulated space mission.
This publication is the first in a series presenting the results of the AstroMentalHealth project. The project is being carried out thanks to a grant from the European Space Agency (ESA) in the context of the first Polish technological and scientific mission to the International Space Station (ISS) – IGNIS.
