Will you embark on the journey of your life?

I was a second year student of materials science and engineering when I applied for an Erasmus+ trip. I heard about the project for the first time from my older brother who had gone to Germany as part of the programme. He told me about the different educational system, the international friendships he made, and the wonderful views. When I started my studies, I also wanted to start travelling. I read about recruitment on the university’s website. When the time came, I applied for the next semester at the University of Aveiro (Portugal).

When I got to the University, I was amazed by the beauty and vastness of the campus, and then, by the kindness of the people. From the very entrance I was greeted by smiling faces, helpful people and my Buddy, who helped me acclimate to the place and find a flat. He also showed me what and where to do. This is how our friendship began – and it continues to this day. The first days were quite a challenge – finding myself in a new city, culture, getting a grasp of the language and a lot of names to remember. Each day provided new experiences. The ESN office organised for us a whole adaptation week during which we got to know our wonderful city called “Portuguese Venice”. We were able to go on a moliceiro ride – a local boat. We visited not only wonderful parks and museums, got to know local delicacies such as tripa (similar to pancakes) or the local delicacy – ovos moles (dessert made of egg yolks).

We also took part in a lot of trips to the nearest cities, incl. Porto, Tomar, Fatima or even Lisbon. We had the opportunity to get to know each other better during integration or culture evenings, where we presented our countries and cultures. Before we started the classes, I was shown around the campus. The entire campus looked like in the movies: fountains, palm trees, salinas and a wonderful sun. Who wouldn’t be delighted? The students can choose these classes that suit them best. I started laboratories in ceramics (that all of Portugal is famous for) but back then I didn’t expect it to be so much fun. We produced ceramics by ourselves, in various ways. Then we were taken to the factory, where we were able to test our samples and participate in the production of ceramics. Being there, I also wanted to learn the local language. A few Portuguese lessons were enough to be able to communicate in a shop or at the university.

The days passed and I tried to live them to their fullest. During the day – classes, in the afternoon – social life. During the weekends I was discovering the beauty of Portugal. I quickly imbued with their peace and joy in life so much that when it was time to go back, I wasn’t about to stop on a single time. And so I went on this adventure again, and then another, and now this is my fourth time. If you still hesitate, If you don’t know if you can handle it, don’t be afraid. You can always look for information about the trip on the websites, read the rules, ask the coordinators, ESN offices or your Buddy. My only advice is: try it, cause it’s worth it! I wish you as many wonderful memories as I have. Who knows what’s waiting for you? How many friendships will you make, how many places will you visit… And maybe you will find the love of your life? Don’t waste your time, just check it out!
