Jan Czochralski

Jan Czochralski – Polish chemist, metallurgist. Inventor of the widely used method of obtaining silicon single crystals.

Did you know that…

Czochralski’s method involves very cautious “pulling” of monocrystals from a molten substance with a rod touching its surface. Silicon crystals grow quickly: 1 m of crystal is formed in 30 hours, and oxide monocrystals used to make lasers grow just over 10 cm per week. As much as 90% of semiconductor devices are created using this method.

Hint

A single silicon crystal of human height probably weighs a lot. Go to the campus’s main building using the closest entrance and find the QR code.
