Competence management with the eye of a practitioner
For quite obvious reasons, universities are unique organisations. At the same time, like many other organisations, the success of a university, however understood, depends on the potential of the people who make up this institution. From this perspective, it is even surprising that universities approach the issue of competence management with such caution. Something that is already the norm in many other organisations, is still treated with a kind of distance in the academia.
From this perspective, the ICSD’s initiative is not only the right course of action, but also needs to be promoted in other Polish universities as soon as possible. As universities are unable to compete financially with many Western universities, it is high time to create such working and development conditions locally, especially for young academics, that they want to develop their talent here.
At the same time, it is worth realising that the process of developing and retaining scientific talent is long-term and of strategic importance. This means that the sooner we start, the more universities will become involved in this way of thinking, and the better the universities cooperate in this, the greater the chance of success. This is one of those situations where working together at a national level is more profitable for everyone than acting alone. Therefore, I encourage the ICSD not only to implement the competence management model at the University of Silesia, but also to promote this approach at least nationally.
