Transport in the Region
All faculties of the University of Silesia are located in cities with well-developed public transportation systems, including bus and tram connections (Katowice, Sosnowiec, Chorzów, Cieszyn).
Timetables and ticket prices for public transport in Katowice, Sosnowiec, Chorzów and the other cities of the Upper Silesian Conurbation are available on the website of the transport company ZTM. For Cieszyn, this information is available on the website of ZGK Sp. z o.o.
The Polish State Railways use the abbreviation ‘PKP’. Timetables for trains are available on the website of PKP. You can buy tickets online through this website as well as at ticket offices at train stations (which only work, however, in bigger cities and towns) and from ticket machines at train stations. Train connections are run by several independent companies (Koleje Śląskie; PKP Intercity – EIP, EI, IC, TLK; Przewozy Regionalne – Regio).
Both state and private companies that run long-distance buses in Poland are often referred to as ‘PKS’. In Katowice, such buses leave from the International Bus Station Katowice (Międzynarodowy Dworzec Autobusowy Katowice in Polish) at Sądowa Street 5, in the city centre. Bus connections from and to Katowice are available on the website of the International Bus Station Katowice. There are also many other, private companies that operate in the region and use various names, e.g. FlixBus, Bus Brothers, Matuszek. Smaller and bigger buses of such private companies are often colloquially referred to as ‘busy’ or ‘busiki’. In Katowice, they leave from various stops located in several points in the city centre (e.g. International Bus Station Katowice in Sądowa Street).
The International Airport Katowice is located 30 km away from Katowice, in Pyrzowice. You can check available plane connections on the airport’s website. From the airport, you can reach the centre of Katowice by taking a bus run by the ZTM company from Pyrzowice Port Lotniczy to Katowice Dworzec (express line AP). There are also some private buses covering the same route.
Note! Please pay attention that passengers who do not possess a valid student ID have to buy regular tickets, not tickets with a student discount.
