Transport in the region

All the faculties of the University of Silesia are located in cities (Katowice, Sosnowiec, Chorzów, Cieszyn) that have good networks of public transport including buses and trams.

PKP, i.e. trains PKP, i.e. trains

The Polish State Railways use the abbreviation ‘PKP’. Timetables for trains are available on the website of PKP. You can buy tickets online through this website as well as at ticket offices at train stations (which only work, however, in bigger cities and towns) and from ticket machines at train stations. Train connections are run by several independent companies (Koleje Śląskie; PKP Intercity – EIP, EI, IC, TLK; Przewozy Regionalne – Regio).

Both state and private companies that run long-distance buses in Poland are often referred to as ‘PKS’. In Katowice, such buses leave from the PKS station at Skargi Street 19, in the city centre. Bus connections from and to Katowice are available on the website of  PKS Katowice. There are also many other, private companies that operate in the region and use various names, e.g. FlixBusBus BrothersMatuszek. Smaller and bigger buses of such private companies are often colloquially referred to as ‘busy’ or ‘busiki’. In Katowice, they leave from various stops located in several points in the city centre (e.g. the PKS station in Skargi Street, Andrzeja Square behind the main train station).

Airport Airport

The International Airport Katowice is located 30 km away from Katowice, in Pyrzowice. You can check available plane connections on the airport’s website. From the airport, you can reach the centre of Katowice by taking a bus run by the ZTM company from Pyrzowice Port Lotniczy to Katowice Dworzec (express line AP2 lub AP3). There are also some private buses covering the same route.

Route: Pyrzowice, lotnisko (airport) – Katowice, dworzec PKP (train station) – Katowice-Ligota, akademiki (student residence halls)

If you have come by plane to the airport in Pyrzowice, you need to take a bus to the centre of Katowice first. The timetable of ZTM buses taking the route form Pyrzowice Port Lotniczy to Katowice Dworzec (AP2 or AP3) is available here. The ticket costs about 14 PLN. When you get to the bus stop called Katowice Dworzec, you need to get off and catch another ZTM bus, no. 12. The stop where you need to get off is called Ligota Akademiki. The ticket for this bus costs about 3.20 PLN.

Route: Katowice, dworzec PKP (train station) – Katowice-Ligota, akademiki (student residence halls)

If you have come to Katowice by train, you need to take a bus next. The bus station (ZTM) is located under the train station, so you just need to go downstairs. The best connection is the bus no. 12. The stop where you need to get off is called Ligota Akademiki. The ticket for this bus costs about 3.20 PLN.

If you have come to Katowice by a long-distance bus, you need to get off at the PKS bus station in Skargi Street. From here, you walk to the ZTM bus stop called Katowice Mickiewicza, located in Mickiewicza Street. Then you take the ZTM bus no. 12. The stop where you need to get off is called Ligota Akademiki. The ticket for this bus costs about 3.20 PLN.

Route: Pyrzowice, lotnisko (airport) – Sosnowiec Dworzec PKP (train station) – Sosnowiec-Pogoń, akademiki (student residence halls).

If you have come by plane to the airport in Pyrzowice, you need to take a bus AP2 and get off at the stop called Sosnowiec Dworzec PKP. The ticket costs about 14 PLN. Then you need to change to get from the train station in Sosnowiec to the quarter of Sosnowiec called Pogoń, where the student residence halls are located. You can take either a tram no. 21, 26 or a bus no. 813, 188, 150. The stop where you need to get off is called Pogoń Akademiki (Sosnowiec). The ticket for this bus costs about 3.20 PLN.

If you have come to Katowice by train, you need to leave the train station and walk for a few minutes to the ZTM bus stop Katowice Piotra Skargi (in Skargi Street). It is in front of the shopping centre called Supersam. From this bus stop, you will need to get to Sosnowiec, to the quarter Pogoń, where the student residence halls are located. You can take a bus no. 40, 805, 807.  The stop where you need to get off is called Pogoń Akademiki (Sosnowiec). The ticket for this bus costs about 3.80 PLN.

If you have come by plane to the airport in Pyrzowice, you need to take a bus to the centre of Katowice first. You are now next to the train station in Cieszyn, and you can walk to the student residence halls on foot (which takes about 15 minutes) or take a ZGK bus no. 40. The bus leaves from the bus stop called Cieszyn Hajduka (located in Hajduka Street). The bus stop where you need to get off is called Cieszyn UŚ. The ticket for this bus costs about 3.40 PLN.
