The University of Silesia is included in the Polish Roadmap for Research Infrastructures created by the Polish Ministry of Education and Science as the institution engaged in 10 out of 70 projects that facilitate conducting ambitious scientific research. According to the “PLOS Biology” magazine, the University employees are also among the scientists who have the greatest influence on the development of the world science.
Thanks to the outstanding research teams and well-equipped laboratories, and by realizing the “Excellence initiative – research university” program (IDUB), we have an important position in the international world of science. Our scientists, specialists in a dozen of disciplines, enjoy the freedom of research by working individually or as a part of the flexible structure based on research teams.
By realizing the University mission we contribute to the regional development by being present in the cultural life of the region, and by cooperation with the public institutions and schools as well as other educational institutions. We cooperate with the local businesses and third-sector organizations as well. The University of Silesia is one of the important centers of the Metropolitan Association of the Upper Silesia and Dąbrowa Basin. Apart from our scientific activity we also conduct numerous activities connected with applying for grants, realization of international projects and organization of many events that popularize science, for example the Pi number’s day or the Silesia Festival of Science.

The University of Silesia has one campus in four cities: Katowice, Chorzów, Cieszyn and Sosnowiec.
The main campus of the University in Katowice located in the center of the city is, among others, the seat of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Law and Administration or the Institute of Chemistry. Also, the main University building – the Rectorate is located here. Therefore, all employees visit the campus in Katowice at the beginning of their employment. Katowice campus is also close to restaurants, cinemas and theatre.
The Chorzów campus is a place of studies and research connected with the exact sciences. It is also a seat of the Silesian Centre for Education and Interdisciplinary Research. The campus in Chorzów is located in the peaceful place full of trees. On the campus, there is a modern place to rest for children and adults – “the multipurpose activity zone”.
The campus in Cieszyn, which is the seat of the Faculty of Arts and Educational Science, is one of the most beautiful university buildings situated in the special atmosphere of the city. The picturesque location of Cieszyn, its rich culture, specificity of the border city and varius cultural events make the Cieszyn campus a unique place for work and studies.
The campus in Sosnowiec, for a change, is not in the city center although not far from it. Among others a part of the Faculty of Humanities (English Studies, Slavic Studies and other programmes) and a part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences are located here. While entering the Faculty of Natural Sciences you can meet a dinosaur 😉
