Katherine Johnson

Katherine Johnson – American mathematician and computational scientist working for NASA

Did you know that…

Many outstanding women have played essential roles in the history of science and technology. We present the story of one of them. Katherine Johnson joined the West Area Computing section of the Langley Laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1953, working for the precursor to NASA. Her career at NASA spanned 35 years. Among other things, she was responsible for determining launch windows and trajectories for the Mercury Program and Apollo Program space flights – these calculations she performed by hand.

Hint

“Such calculations most likely exhausted, so it was necessary to go eat something…. Do you think our canteen resembles the one that was on the Apollo spacecraft?”
