Children’s Day with a picture book

| Tomek Grząślewicz |

“Picture books allow parents to talk to their children about problems that concern them personally”, says Justyna Stefańczyk, PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts of the University of Silesia. “The narrative is created by illustrations, interaction with the text happens separately, but there is also space for parents and guardians to tell their own stories, and, of course, there is the space for children.”

Therefore, on the occasion of International Children’s Day (1 June), in addition to an ice cream dessert, a visit to a water park or to an amusement park, it is worth giving your children a book that conveys important content in a graphically attractive way. This could be The Law of Conservation of Energy, which J. Stefańczyk, PhD created as part of the 2nd edition of the Freedom of Research call for proposals of the Research Excellence Initiative. The book was published by the Dzika Małpa publishing house founded by J. Stefańczyk, PhD.

In the podcast of the University of Silesia in Katowice, J. Stefańczyk, PhD talks about The Law of Conservation of Energy. She also raises other interesting issues:

  • Who should choose what books children read: adults or children?
  • How did Bob Dylan inspire the book Eco Song?
  • Will apps like ‘Co robią zwierzaki?’ (‘What Do Animals Do?’) replace traditional picture books?

The interview was conducted by Tomek Grząślewicz from the Media Communication Centre of the University of Silesia.
