‘Discover Canada 2023’ – The final of the 9th National Competition of Knowledge about Canada

The final of the ninth edition of the National Competition of Knowledge about Canada – ‘Discover Canada 2023’ took place on 16-17 March 2023 at the Community Cultural Centre in Żory

The ceremonial event and award ceremony were attended by Catherine Godin, Canadian Ambassador to Poland, Tomasz Pietrzykowski, Vice-Rector for International and Domestic Cooperation, Vice-Mayor of the City of Żory, other representatives of the local authorities and a representative of the Board of Education.

Twelve students from across the country qualified for stage 3 of the competition, where they took an exam in selected aspects of Canada’s culture, history and politics. The participants also gave a presentation on “Canadian ways of dealing with the environmental crisis”.

Cooperation at the highest level

The ‘Discover Canada’ competition is a joint project of the English Philology degree programme at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Silesia and the Karol Miarka Secondary School in Żory. The project was held under the honorary patronage of the Minister of National Education, the Rector of the University of Silesia, the Canadian Embassy in Poland, the Polish Association of Canadian Studies, the Silesian Education Superintendent and Waldemar Socha, Mayor of Żory.

The competition is an example of cooperation between the University of Silesia and the community. It consists of three stages: Stage 1 – School competition (online), Stage II – Semi-final at the Faculty of Humanities in Sosnowiec, Stage III – Final at the Community Cultural Centre in Żory. The organising committee and the university committee of the competition include: Eugenia Sojka, PhD, DLitt (coordinator), Sabina Sweta Sen-Podstawska, PhD and Rafał Madeja, MA. Tomasz Soroka, PhD from the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora of the Jagiellonian University was also part of the competition committee.

Student record books for the best

The winners of the competition received attractive prizes, including student record books for the English Philology degree programme at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Silesia, high financial prizes awarded by the Mayor of the City of Żory (PLN 3,000 for the first place, PLN 2,000 for the second place and PLN 1,000 for the third place), as well as book prizes sponsored by the Canadian Embassy in Poland, which also financially supports the organisation of the project.
