What do I do professionally?

Cześć! I’m Carina, a historian and Viking-age scholar from Germany. I am an Assistant Professor and Marie Curie Fellow at the Centre for Nordic and Old English Studies at the University of Silesia. My research focuses on human-environment interactions in medieval Iceland as part of a two-year postdoctoral project. Join me in exploring the fascinating connections between history and the environment!

At the University of Silesia in Katowice, I greatly appreciate the warm and supportive environment surrounding me. It’s hard to imagine a more welcoming atmosphere! My mentor, Professor Jakub Morawiec, has been incredibly supportive of my research over the years. He encouraged me to apply for the Polonez BIS grant from the National Science Centre (NCN), which I was lucky to receive!

My first day at work

I have visited both the university and our centre before. So, the first day was filled with excitement and a sense of familiarity. It started with a campus tour; before I knew it, it was time to dive into work! Shortly after my first day, I was also preparing to leave for an environmental workshop at Princeton, which added an extra layer of excitement to my new research position.

What suprised me?

After arriving in Poland, I had two pleasant surprises when I met colleagues from our university in unexpected places far away from Silesia. The first was in Oslo, Norway, and more recently, during a trip to China. It was a pleasure to meet them again here in Katowice, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since. It’s fascinating how our academic community transcends borders!

What I like about Katowice?

Living near Park Śląski offers a peaceful escape from daily life and allows us to enjoy nature’s tranquillity. The industrial charm of Nikiszowiec highlights Katowice’s mining history, while hidden gems in the city centre reveal vibrant urban life. Come and study at the University of Silesia and discover Katowice’s unique blend of culture and nature!
