International Online Seminar: “Critical Perspectives on Damon Galgut”

An international online seminar entitled “Critical Perspectives on Damon Galgut” will take place on MS Teams on Tuesday, 14 April at 17:00 (CET).

The seminar will take the form of a discussion with contributors to the volume Critical Perspectives on Damon Galgut (Routledge, 2026), edited by Professor Zbigniew Białas. The volume includes articles on Damon Galgut’s work by scholars from various academic institutions.

Damon Galgut (b. 1963) is one of the most important contemporary South African writers. In his novels, he explores the historical and social transformations of South Africa, particularly the transition from apartheid to democracy. In 2021, he was awarded the Booker Prize for his novel The Promise.

Participants will include contributors to the volume:

  • Professor Elleke Boehmer (University of Oxford)
  • Dr Ewa Dynarowicz (University of Wrocław)
  • Professor Mélanie Joseph-Vilain (Université Bourgogne Europe)
  • Professor Robert Kusek (Jagiellonian University in Kraków)
  • Professor Sławomir Masłoń (University of Silesia in Katowice)
  • Dr Julia Szołtysek (University of Silesia in Katowice)

The seminar is organised by Dr Marek Pawlicki (University of Silesia in Katowice), who will also moderate the discussion. The event will be held in English.

The aim of the seminar is to discuss current research directions on Damon Galgut’s work.
