- International cooperation with foreign institutions
The Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Silesia in Katowice conducts international cooperation, among others with:
The Loyola University New Orleans College of Law (USA)
The University of Arkansas at Little Rock, William H. Bowen School of Law (USA)
The University of Toledo College of Law (USA)
Scientific partners and co-founders of the USA Law School, which serves as a platform for educational and scientific collaboration between the University of Silesia and three leading universities in the USA. The collaboration includes joint research, scientific projects, and the preparation of publications. As part of the cooperation, employees from the aforementioned Universities have served as Visiting Professors at WPIA, delivering lectures, seminars, and workshops. The collaboration also covers educational cooperation, which is carried out via online connections.
Lincoln Memorial University, Knoxville (USA)
The collaboration includes co-organizing and co-leading the international Global Law Classroom project with project initiator Professor Melanie Reid.
The Southeastern Association of Law Schools (USA)
The Southeastern Association of Law Schools (SEALS), a regional association of law schools, hosts an annual meeting that is held in late July or early August. A highlight of the meeting is the New Scholars Workshop which offers newer faculty the opportunity to present a work in progress, and to receive feedback from assigned mentors and audience participants.
The meeting also offers legal educators panels and discussion groups that focus on pedagogy; thus offering law professors an opportunity to enhance their classroom teaching.
Finally, it provides numerous panels and discussion groups of a host of cutting-edge topics that will prove important for both scholarly works and teaching covering the breadth of legal issues. Because the meeting attracts scholars from all over the U.S., indeed from around the world, the discussions can be lively and intense.
School of Law and School of European Languages and Cultures, Beijing Foreign Studies University in Beijing (China)
Northeastern University in Shenyang (China)
Scientific partners and co-founders of the School of Law and Chinese Culture, which serves as a platform for educational and scientific collaboration between the University of Silesia and the aforementioned Universities. The cooperation involves joint research, scientific projects, and the preparation of publications. As part of the collaboration, staff members from both universities have served as Visiting Professors at our School of Law, delivering lectures, seminars, and workshops. Students from both universities also participated in a student exchange program, with some completing their studies in Beijing and, respectively, in Katowice. The collaboration also includes supervision of doctoral candidates within the framework of joint doctoral programs, as well as joint publication projects and business support for entrepreneurs collaborating with the partners.
Inter-American Academy of Human Rights of the Autonomous University of Coahuila (Mexico)
The Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia and the Inter-American Academy of Human Rights (Mexico) have signed an institutional agreement of cooperation in 2022. In the last two years, the institutions have jointly organized an international seminary hosting three Professors and the Mexican Ambassador in a discussion pertaining to the protection of human rights in Latin America. Further cooperation has crystallized in the joint participation of scholars in conferences organized at the respective institutions, research projects, or participation in teaching activities. Currently, the institutions are working on expanding the agreement to ensure effective academic exchanges between students.
Bahria University (Pakistan)
The Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia led the signing of a full cooperation agreement between the University of Silesia in Katowice and the University of Bahria (Islamabad, Pakistan). A scholar from the University of Silesia has taken part in teaching activities organized by BU. Both institutions have been working to implement student exchange effectively.
Miskolc University (Hungary)
As a result of the earlier individual scientific cooperation between researchers from the law faculties, in 2020, the University of Silesia in Katowice signed a bilateral framework agreement with the University of Miskolc (Hungary). This agreement enables the development of research and educational projects, broadening the scope of cooperation to include new fields.
From the very beginning, dr Michał Barański from the University of Silesia in Katowice and dr Gábor Mélypataki from the University of Miskolc have coordinated this collaboration, implementing a variety of initiatives. For instance, in 2020, the seminar “Katowice-Miskolc: Distance Learning – International Discussion” was organized. Researchers from both Universities have prepared joint publications on several occasions (comparative analyses of SMEs in Poland and Hungary; research on remote working; contributions to volumes on Central European labour law). Polish researchers have also participated in international scientific conferences organised by the Hungarian partner. Hungarian researchers have also contributed to the development of the scientific journal “Z Problematyki Prawa Pracy i Polityki Socjalnej” [Labour Law and Social Policy Issues].
In turn, Polish researchers participate in the editorial work of the scientific journals “Central European Academy Law Review” and “Central European Journal of Comparative Law.” In 2021, the Erasmus+ program was expanded to include the law faculties of both universities. Cooperation was also established with the doctoral school of the University of Miskolc, where graduates of the University of Silesia (mgr Tomasz Mirosławski and mgr Norbert Sitko) were admitted as part of the Central European Academy in Budapest (the Central European Academy Scholarship doctoral program, organized by the University of Miskolc). Dr Michał Barański became the supervisor of both doctoral candidates. Moreover, between 2022 and 2024, the University of Miskolc participated in the GEPARD project, led by the University of Silesia. As part of the cooperation between the universities, visits by Hungarian researchers were also organized who conducted in Katowice academic seminars and delivered lectures on labour law, thereby strengthening the exchange of knowledge and experience.
