Animal Protection in Polish Law

| Weronika Cygan-Adamczyk |

Our perception of animals is changing more and more. Playful bees, inquisitive octopuses, self-healing orangutans, and grieving elephants show us that our evolutionary cousins experience the world in various ways and are far more complex than mere flesh driven by instincts alone. How does Polish and international law respond to the latest scientific discoveries? Is it keeping up?

The reason for this conversation is Animal Rights Day, celebrated on 22 May. Małgorzata Lubelska-Sazanów, PhD from the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Silesia talks about how animals are treated under Polish law. She worked on a project called “The Future of Animal Breeding – Legal, Ethical and Environmental Aspects” as part of the third edition of the “Freedom of Research” competition run by the Research Excellence Initiative. The interview was conducted by Weronika Cygan-Adamczyk from the Media Communication Centre.
