Absolwent Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego; w latach 1980-2005 pracownik Zamku Królewskiego na Wawelu, a od 2003 Instytutu Historii UŚ. Członek Real Academia de Historia w Madrycie i Instituto Universitario „La Corte en Europa” (IULCE) w Madrycie. Zainteresowania badawcze: dyplomacja europejska w epoce nowożytnej, relacje polsko-hiszpańskie w XVI-XVII wieku, ceremoniał dworów królewskich, dzieje Wawelu.
